Meghan Markle is pregnant and is currently sporting a baby bump; she's not fat in any way, shape, or form. So onlookers were surprised to see how well the Duchess took it when a woman at one of her official engagements called her "a fat lady" to her face.
Yesterday (16 January), Meghan was visiting Mayhew - an animal welfare charity she was recently announced as patron of. While there she was introduced to a group of women, one of whom was a lady named Peggy. As Meghan shook Peggy's hand, she told the Duchess: "May God always bless you". So far, so good.
But as Meghan turned to meet the next person, Peggy added: "You are a fat lady!"
The moment was caught on camera by various royal correspondents:
Because she's legit royalty and knows how to act with eloquence and grace, instead of taking it as an insult, Meghan responded by laughing, and adding: "I'll take that!"
It's obvious Peggy's comment was not actually meant to offend, and providing further context, one Twitter user later informed ITV News' Royal Editor, Chris Ship (who had also witnessed the lol-worthy moment) that "it’s a complement amongst African and Caribbean people".
Everyone's clicking on...
Chris shared this information with his followers, writing: "Some context on the Meghan 'you're a fat lady' comment..."
It was a busy day all round for Meg yesterday, who not only spent the afternoon cuddling dogs at Mayhew, but also attended the premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s 'Totem' at the Royal Albert Hall. The is raising awareness and funds for Prince Harry's charity Sentebale, which works to support vulnerable children and young people affected by HIV in southern Africa.
Meghan stepped out wearing head-to-toe sequins for the occasion, in a dress that showed off her ever-growing bump. Having previously stayed hush-hush about her specific due date, on a visit to Birkenhead earlier this week the Duchess of Sussex revealed she and Prince Harry are expecting their baby in April.
Only three months left of being a "fat lady", then...
