If you haven't listened to King Princess before, open up Spotify immediately and get 'Talia' on. And if you've been hooked on the singer/songwriter/musician since 'Pussy Is God' then: I see you. Real name Mikaela Straus, she's been rumoured to be dating Amandla Stenberg.
Now, even bloody Taylor Swift is banging on about her. In her recent Entertainment Weekly cover interview, Taylor was bigging my precious KP right up. She said, "I love the romantic ambience of what [the singer/multi-instrumentalist] is doing. It is very nostalgic." And yeah, that sent lesbian Twitter into meltdown hoping this was another scrap of proof as to TS' potential queerness.
All this to say: King Princess is a big deal rn. And she just sat down for an interview with After Ellen to chat about her identity. She's been known to speak openly about her love of girls, but rarely speaks about her labels or whether she identifies as a lesbian.
"I feel like all female queer people have this conversation about the words and how we feel about it," she told the interviewer. "I felt so much more connected to the term lesbian when I was younger. Because I think in some ways my gender situation is difficult for me to connect to the term lesbian as much as gay."
Speaking about the term lesbian, she said she uses it "sometimes". "What I love about the time we are living in now is that you can express gender queerness, that you’re gay, that you’re a lesbian, a girl dating girls. Because I am a girl who dates girls and I have been for a long time. So I am a lesbian. But sometimes I feel like a gay man, you know? Just in my spirit. I’m learning how to be comfortable in between," she added.
"I watch the most lesbian content of anything I watch. I love it, I connect to it. Does that mean the term feels more right to me than the term gay? Not necessarily. There is no right way to be a lesbian.
Everyone's clicking on...
"We are a picky ass community. And I love that. We are demanding. But we also have to like loosen our assholes and understand that there’s a lot of different people to include under one label. And if you identify as gay it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a bad lesbian."
PS a little tip: She also said she's super into lesbian period drama Gentleman Jack starring Suranne Jones, which is airing on BBC right now.
