Ah the Caribbean. True paradise just a hop, skip and a (nine-hour) flight from London, with all the picture-perfect scenery you could dream of for a beachy break. And there's no better island to visit than the Dominican Republic.

While Santo Domingo or Punta Cana may be an obvious choice when looking for the best place to stay in the Dominican Republic, a little more research will uncover other areas of the island that will tick that ‘paradise’ box, without some of the crowds that come with the more popular areas.

If you’re looking for recommendations away from the typical tourist traps, where under-the-radar white sand beaches abound, tropical forests and colourful rural landscapes border every view, then look no further. We’ve got the 411 on where to stay while in the Dominican Republic, and how to while away the hours (the ones where you’re not sipping cocktails on a pool lounger, of course).

Where to stay

Eden Roc Cap Cana

Just a short 20-minute drive from Punta Cana airport is the gated community resort of Cap Cana. Spotless, quiet and safe, entering this part of the island feels just as VIP as you’d hope from a Caribbean escape – and that’s before you’ve even seen the jaw-dropping beauty of the Eden Roc resort. Pulling into the hotel reception, which so effortlessly frames a Caribbean landscape of swaying palm trees and a glistening sea, you’ll be greeted by friendly, welcoming faces. You will just know that this is the kind of place where you’ll leave already planning your return trip.

The resort, while boutique (the number of rooms here is just 67), is sprawling. You can either choose to stay in the beachfront rooms and suites which have sweeping views of that pristine, white sand beach you’ve seen in all your Google searches, or you can take a larger villa, which is a golf buggy ride – your own private one, naturally - away from the main reception. Due to having two small guests with us (a nearly-three-year old and young infant), we opted for the latter, choosing a family villa complete with bunk beds, play teepee, and every amenity you could hope for when travelling with kids (sun cream, cots, nappies – you name it, they had it). The villa was huge – and came complete with its own private garden and pool; perfect for entertaining adults and young ones alike. Alongside the family villas, the hotel also has standard one-bedroom and two-bedroom villas which would be perfect for couples of groups seeking that element of privacy, all furnished with the same luxury offering in a typically laid-back Caribbean style. There are larger-still accommodations too, if budget allows.

There are pretty swimming pools nestled in and amongst the accommodation, as well as three premium dining options (more on this later!), a kids club that is so highly recommended I wanted to be a child myself just to experience it, spa and of course beach, complete with copious luxurious loungers and to-your-bed drinks service. And just on the drinks for one moment, don’t you dare think of leaving without sampling the hotel’s Pina Colada (virgin or otherwise). We visited numerous other bars during our stay but this PC remains unmatched.

While the rooms are stunning and the amenities abound, where Eden Roc truly stands apart is its service. Five star, in every sense, as everywhere you wander, each member of staff will know your name even if you’ve never met before. Whether you just want help navigating the island, spa treatments booked or dinner reservations made, or perhaps you need help with making an occasion extra special, the concierge and private butler team (yes, really!) will do everything they can to make your stay stand out.

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda

Following the coast to the north, nestled in an untouched region of the Dominican Republic about an hour and a half drive from Punta Cana, is Michès. This sleepy coastal town is home to nature-fuelled escapes that dodge the crowds and its high-profile roster of film appearances: The Godfather, Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean are some to name a few.

Step aside Zendaya because chic has a new meaning. In every sense of the word, you can choose eco-chic with Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda. Whether you're consumed by wanderlust, looking to splurge on a couples retreat or indulge the family with luxury two weeks away from reality, this environmentally-friendly, beachside hideaway is it.

GERALDINE BRUNEEL

There are four distinct boutique villages (as they call them) to choose from when it comes to your accommodation – all of which guarantee a tailored holiday experience. The one downside? (if you can even consider it one!) is to expect a day or two spent familiarising yourself with your surroundings. Aka, the resort is so vast that golf buggies will be your BFF.

The closest village to the resorts hub is 'Caribbean Paradise'. The vibrant and lively ambience makes for the perfect group stay. Not too far from this sits the 'Emerald Jungle', an adult-only zone just steps away from the zen pool (with a swim up bar for your cocky Ts) and fitness and Spa facilities – think a serene area, perfect for relaxing with a piña colada and a splash of (pardon the pun) poolside reading.

Similar to this comes the 'Archipelago'. While it's the smallest of all the villages, the adult-only spot is certainly the most luxe. These villa-like rooms are a cocoon, ideal for couples seeking ultimate exclusivity. I mean, with your own private pool, a hammock for snoozing and steps away from the romantic oceanfront, how can one complain?

The 'Explorer Cove' is the destination of families, just a short walk away from the kids clubs and sports facilities; waterpolo and family yoga are just touching the water's surface (soz) when it comes to activity options.

Home to rejuvenation with treetop/ariel yoga, salsa classes, cooking lessons, kayaking, horse riding and most importantly (IMO), a never-ending supply of cocky T's at the Coco Plum Beach Lounge, it’s easy to while away the days safe within the resort surrounds. Although of course, island exploration is always recommended!

What to do

The hidden treasures of Los Haitises

Continuing along the coast northbound, is Los Haitises National Park; a protected, natural area covered in dense vegetation and perfect for those wanting to explore. So, wear your walking shoes!

The UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of valleys and caves which are an immersive part of the Dominican's history and its indigenous people. And beyond the initial land, you can take a speedboat ride to explore the waters creatures. The tiny cobalt crabs were a personal fave.

Side note: expect fun and rum on the ride that'll be sure to ease any motion sickness, if you get my vibe!

Paraíso Caño Hondo

Located at the outskirts of Los Haitises National Park is the unique Eco-lodge, Paraíso Caño Hondo. While it's a hotel in itself, the natural swimming pools make for a day out of lush landscapes. Hike through the pools to the top of the architecture for breath-taking views. And do make sure to warn your friends and family of where you are before doing-so, as these sights are easy to get lost in.

Laguna Redonda

For the foodies and lovers of agriculture among us, Laguna Redonda is where you can experience true flavours of the Dominican. Discover the playful side of nature aboard a safari truck for coconut watertasting on the beach or venture out to the nearby rice plantation fields for a tasting of the local treats, including El Seibo’s cacao plantations. And yes, that does mean chocolate sampling, to me and you!

And not too far from the Laguna, is Montaña Redonda. Up in the infamous mountains is where the adrenaline rush is found thanks to its exhilitating summit side swing.

Where to eat

Eden Roc, Cap Cana

Eden Roc’s three restaurants offer something different depending on your mood. Choose the Blue Grill + Bar for breakfast with a pool view, or a more laid-back lunch or dinner option with burgers and sushi you’ll want to eat again, and again, and again (trust us, we did). La Palapa sits perched on the rocks overlooking the bay, and is home to the best Paella we’ve ever (really!) had. Lastly is Mediterraneo, the fine dining option which attracts many diners from across the island thanks to its innovative flavours and exceptional service.

Club Med, Michès

At Club Med, you can enjoy a choice of four restaurants. The 'Cayuco' restaurant is the main buffet with everything from pasta to pizza and of course, the traditional Dominican flavours of the sea. 'Coco Plum Lounge' is also a firm favourite of ours thanks to its chilled atmosphere and ocean views; if you're seeking a lie-in, see to this lounge for a late brekkie. 'Coal & Copper' is perfect for those after a luxury culinary experience, though, the steakhouse is reservation only. So, book in fast! Side note: they do cater to veggies and vegans with a select few options. Last but certainly not least comes the 'Secret Chocolate Room'. And yes, while the confectionery-filled treasure room is for kids, you can bet to see us in there every evening for dessert!

Restaurante La Yola - Puntacana Yacht Club

Punta Cana, a popular destination with travellers thanks to its international airport, is a great location for the foodies among us. Home to its very own yacht club, you can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine and seafood before or after a trip out to sea at La Yola. Modelled on a fishing boat, the restaurant perches on the oceanfront at the Puntacana Resort & Club Marina, with stunning views of the sparkling turquoise waters.

To note: fussy eaters, perhaps revise the menu before visiting as the selection on offer is boujee AF... in the best way possible, ofc! 'Red tuna carpaccio with passion fruit vinaigrette, avocado and grated fried coconut', is a prime example of said bouj.

Dinner in the Sky Punta Cana

This bucket list event fuses the best of activity and extravagance and includes exactly what its namesake would suggest. Strap in (quite literally) as your head will be in the clouds (again, quite literally) while you sit around a table suspended in the air.

Yes, it is on the pricier side of things ($150-$1,180, depending on the experience chosen), but you can't argue with the offering if budget allows. From 3-4 course meals to an open bar, you need not be short of a full stomach.

Oh, and FYI…

  • An American-model charging adaptor is essential due to the difference in UK/European plugs.
  • This is a Spanish-speaking island, so, brush up on your 'hola'!
  • While the island is unintentionally a no-phone zone for its blissful, scenic surroundings, we recommend bringing a portable charger for all the Instagrammable panoramic content you'll want to snap up.

Paradise awaits!
