Prosecco is a must-buy for all occasions - from finishing work on a Friday night, to your bestie's birthday, and big celebrations like a graduation or new job. And you need one guaranteed to keep the whole room happy, whatever's on the agenda. With that in mind, our wine experts got to work to find the best Prosecco to toast with in 2022 (and into 2023 - hello, NYE).

Plus, once you're stocked up, take a look at our favourite Prosecco cocktail recipes too. Happy celebrating!

    What exactly is Prosecco?

Prosecco is a sparkling wine made primarily in Veneto, Italy using Glera grapes, though other grapes can be added. Prosecco is all about vibrant bubbles and fresh, fruit-forward flavour, with classic aromas including green apple, pear, honeysuckle and peach.

How much should you spend on a bottle of Prosecco?

Much like Champagne, there’s quite a big difference in price point between the highest quality Prosecco (which carries a DOCG classification, meaning the bottle is made with grapes from the best-performing vineyards) and more budget-friendly, entry-level Proseccos.

Nowadays, you can find great value bottles (including our worthy winner) from as little as £10. Though we’ve also tested more premium options if you’re looking to spend a little extra.

What food should you pair with Prosecco?

The slightly sweeter flavour profile of Prosecco means it’s a dream pairing with many flavours, including light seafood starters and Italian charcuterie. Don’t plan on going all out on the nibbles? A selection of salty nuts will work just as well.

    How we test Prosecco

Our panel of 10 experts sipped their way through 24 bottles of Prosecco from the leading supermarkets and wine merchants in search of the best bubbles (tough job, right?). They were looking for a bottle with vibrant bubbles that hit all the classic flavour notes (think green apple, pear, citrus) and, ultimately, were worthy of an extra-special celebration.

    These were their favourites…

    1
    Best Prosecco

    La Gioiosa Prosecco DOC

    La Gioiosa Prosecco DOC

    Best Prosecco for: All-round celebrations.

Why it's our fave: Our winning Prosecco wowed our panel with its classically clean aroma (think crisp green apple, citrus and peach), expressive bubbles and a refreshing finish. Plus, at £10 a bottle, it makes a great option for drinks with the girls – though it’s more than worthy of a special occasion, too.

    2
    Best blow-the-budget Prosecco

    Della Vite Prosecco Superiore DOCG

    Della Vite Prosecco Superiore DOCG

    Best Prosecco for: Splashing out.

Why it's our fave: Created by sisters Cara, Poppy and Chloe Delevingne, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the Della Vitte bottle is so chic. Sure, it’s one of the pricier options we tested, but this could quite easily stand in for your favourite champers. Impressive salinity, balanced floral aromas and a truly indulgent mouthfeel (terrible word but it's a genuine wine-tasting term), our panel felt this was worth every penny.

    3
    Best Prosecco for winter escapism

The Emissary Asolo DOCG Superiore Prosecco

The Emissary Asolo DOCG Superiore Prosecco

Best Prosecco for: Dreaming of summer.

Why it's our fave: Made exclusively with DOCG-certified (AKA the highest-rated) grapes, this is an expressive Prosecco full of citrus and refreshing acidity which, according to our tasting panel, tastes “just like a summer holiday” – can we buy them in bulk?

    4
    Best budget Prosecco

Waitrose & Partners Blueprint Prosecco DOC

Waitrose & Partners Blueprint Prosecco DOC

Best Prosecco for: Bubbles on a budget.

Why it's our fave: We almost didn’t share this with you because, at £7.99, this is a complete steal and we quite want them all for ourselves. But, sharing’s caring, so if you’re after a well-balanced bottle that hits every high note (complex aroma, rounded mouthfeel, lengthy finish) then make it this.

    5
    Best Prosecco for gifting

    Moonpig Personalised Prosecco

    Moonpig Personalised Prosecco

Best Prosecco for: An extra-special present.

Why it's our fave: This personalisable Prosecco from Moonpig solves the annual stress over what to get your office Secret Santa, plus there’s next day delivery available if you, ahem, leave it until the last minute. In terms of flavour, it’s very floral-forward, with just enough citrus to balance out the blend.

    6
Best Prosecco to drink with chocolate

    Hotel Chocolat Prosecco

    Hotel Chocolat Prosecco

Best Prosecco for: Pairing with chocolate.

Why it's our fave: We don’t need too much convincing when it comes to Prosecco and chocolate – especially when it’s Hotel Chocolat, but even with our most discerning heads on this bottle scored highly. The drier-style Prosecco offers well-rounded fruit flavour and fine bubbles, pairing perfectly with these creamy white chocolate batons.

    7
Best Prosecco for a fancy bottle

    Bottega Gold Prosecco

    Bottega Gold Prosecco

Best Prosecco for: A pretty bottle.

Why it's our fave: Bottega is instantly recognisable by its gold bottle, making it a failsafe gift (you can even engrave it with a message for that extra-special touch). It’s light gold in the glass, with delicate aromas of stone fruit and crisp citrus, leading to a short yet sweet finish. Yum.

    8
    Best Prosecco for aperitifs

    Adnams Prosecco DOC

    Adnams Prosecco DOC

Best Prosecco for: The perfect aperitif.

Why it's our fave: Our panel was impressed by the lively bubbles and balanced flavours at play in Adnams Prosecco. Very fruit-forward, with aromas of crisp green apple, citrus and pear, this easy-drinker would make an excellent aperitif for drinks parties.

    9
    Best Prosecco for toasting

    Sensi 18K Prosecco Gold

    Sensi 18K Prosecco Gold

Best Prosecco for: Toasting a big win.

Why it's our fave: This glitzy bottle would be great for gifting... if you can bear to part ways with it, that is. Made with 100% Glera grapes, this Prosecco has a relatively delicate citrussy aroma and bright, effervescent bubbles – perfect for a celebratory toast.

    10
    Best Prosecco by the case

M&S Prosecco Brut (case of six)

M&S Prosecco Brut (case of six)

    Best Prosecco for: Bulk buying.

Why it's our fave: M&S makes it all too easy to play host with this affordable, easy-drinking Prosecco by the case. Expect lively bubbles, clean minerality and an enticing stone fruit aroma, with just enough acidity to please our tasting panel.

    11
    Best Prosecco for sweet tooths

    Abbazia Atmosphere Prosecco DOC

    Abbazia Atmosphere Prosecco DOC
    Now 55% Off

    Best Prosecco for: Sweet flavours.

Why it's our fave: This Prosecco isn’t overly effervescent (meaning the bubbles are less pronounced than others on test), but our panel enjoyed the well-balanced sweetness and fruitier flavour profile. If you prefer your wine on the sweet side, this is the bottle for you.

    12
    Editor's pick

La Gioiosa Prosecco Rosé Millesimato Brut

La Gioiosa Prosecco Rosé Millesimato Brut

    Best Prosecco for: Rosé lovers.

Why it's our fave: Rosé + Prosecco = two of our favourite things. So why not mix them both and indulge in a fresh rosé Prosecco? This one's on the drier side, if that's your preference - and the pretty bottle makes a perfect gift or table centrepiece (though not for long once it's been popped).
