The reason for this is because if you carried it vertically in a shopping bag, all of the melted cheese would roll off its saucy crust and slump over into the corner, ruining the equilibrium and leaving you with a sad mound instead of the geometrical perfection that is a fresh pizza.
Which is why this photo of a man carrying his pizza in such an atrocious way quickly made its way onto Imgur, casting horror into the hearts of pizza-lovers everywhere.
