Trifle is hands down one of the most underrated desserts around. When you think about it, nothing can come close to the winning combination of thick custard and light sponge with whipped cream and sweet fruit, not to mention the warming hit of sherry.

Doing a public service and helping to bring this classic British dessert back to the forefront of everyone's minds, Marks & Spencer has launched the trifle to rival all trifles, and we can't contain our excitement.

A year in the making, M&S' 'Our Best Trifle Ever' is made with Madagascan vanilla thick-set custard, double cream, light sponge and mountains of red fruits.

Sounds like a regular trifle to us, but the retailer has insisted that the key to this trifle's deliciousness is the 'perfect ratio' of custard, cream, sponge and fruit – measured with 'scientific precision'.

Typical of M&S, the ingredients themselves are also of the highest quality, with the strawberry and raspberry compote being 80 percent whole fruit, the custard infused with Madagascan vanilla and the eggs being free range.

You'll have noticed that the trifle uses compote instead of jelly, and M&S reminds us that in a recent interview, Mary Berry revealed that jelly actually 'has no place in an adult trifle'... controversial.

Everyone's clicking on...

Jelly versus compote was put to a public vote, and compote won by a long run.

M&S is so sure it's trifle is the trifle to rival all trifles, it's predicting it to become its best-selling dessert of all time.

"Everyone loves a trifle. It’s the ideal family dessert that’s loved by both kids and grown-ups and has never gone out of fashion," explained M&S dessert developer, Dan Fletcher.

"It’s rarely shifted from being in our top three puds but we’re expecting even greater things now and are hoping to see it top the charts!"

Serving six people (or just one if we get our hands on it), the trifle hits stores on the 3 April, costing just £5.

It's been 50 years since M&S sold its fist ready-made trifle, and it seems the brand is determined to keep this British dessert classic alive!
