The best of 1980s fashion: 37 iconic outfits including polka dots, worn-in denim and oversized blazers
Go straight to the source for maximalist fashion inspo

In case you haven’t heard, 2025 has been named the year of ‘boom boom’ (well, that’s what trend forecaster Sean Monahan has named it anyway). This ‘vibe shift’ — another phrase he coined, along with ‘normcore’ — echoes the late 1980s attitude of excess. Think more is more; goodbye quiet luxury and clean girl aesthetic, boom boom is all about maximalism. Giant fur coats, oversized shoulder pads and accessories aplenty, designers have embraced the look in a major way if the Autumn/Winter 2025 catwalks are anything to go by.
Saint Laurent showcased a colour-clash frenzy (with some leopard print thrown in for good measure); Valentino layered ruffled prom dresses with lace bodysuits; and Miu Miu said faux-fur stoles and brooches only please. So what better way to usher in this new loud era, than to look back at the original source material?
When it comes to Eighties fashion, there's no such thing as OTT. There was no social media, thus no such thing as algorithm dressing or micro-trends. It was a different time, people! And everyone was a lot freer and more creative because of it. From music legends Madonna, Prince and Janet Jackson to supermodels Jerry Hall, Cindy Crawford and Pat Cleveland, get prepared to be inspired by some seriously major looks that are as relevant today as they were back then.
