For a moment, imagine being a muse. Not only a muse but Josh Safdie's muse on Uncut Gems (Uncuh Gehms, if you're in the know). Surely, in this imaginary world, you would wear, quite literally, whatever you want, wherever you want. A transparent outfit composed solely of condoms, for example. Or, on more moderate occasions, using a body bag as a tote. For Julia Fox, this is a regular week.
Part performance art, part escape from her usual "unglamorous" life, Fox has become synonymous with wearing daring, avant-garde outfits – no matter the event. Recently, the 33-year-old actor, model and mum-of-one, stunned New York Fashion Week with an embroidered micro-mini wedding dress, opera gloves and floor-length veil replete with a hugely oversized ruffled hem. A bridal-inspired fever dream, it looked as if she floated in from the clouds.
Her most recent appearance, to celebrate the premiere of her film Something You Said Last Night in New York, more than lived up to expectations, featuring a solid-looking ribbed metal corset cage, sweeping black skirt, sheer opera gloves and a ginormous, crow-shaped handbag.
Undeniably artistic, the slightly sinister-looking handbag looked bigger than life-size, the ominous shape of a crow looking for perch.
Curated by Fox's regular stylist Briana Andalore, the duo favours an outré aesthetic, including outfits with exposed underwear, tiny-shell encrusted bras or, solely made up of watches and watch straps. And this 'fit slots perfectly in the Fox/Andalore fashion canon. An extension of her non-confirming, boundary-pushing choices, Fox has repeatedly expressed a love for fashion that extends beyond just looking nice.
In my very humble opinion, the best thing about Fox, outside of her powerful self-love mantras and no-BS attitude, is that she makes a moment out of anything. That's really fun. Keep on keeping on, J!
