Sex Education is back for its fourth and final season, as fans see Otis and Maeve's story come to an end for a final time. But while Netflix have confirmed there's no season five on the cards - could there be any Sex Education spin-offs? Here's what we know so far.
Why is Sex Education coming to an end?
There are multiple reasons why the show might be coming to an end, including the fact the cast have likely outgrown playing teenagers, and also want to focus on other projects (hello, Ncuti Gatwa as Doctor Who.)
Also, the show's creator and writer Laurie Nunn revealed Sex Education had kind of reached its natural conclusion with season four, and it felt like the right time to tie up the loose ends.
In an open letter to fans, she explained, "Writing this feels bittersweet, as we've decided the fourth season will also be the final instalment of the show. This was not an easy decision to make, but as the themes and stories of the new season crystallised, it became clear that this was the right time to graduate.
"We are incredibly proud of Sex Education and feel indebted to our briliant writers, cast and crew who put so much heart into making every episode. They have worked tirelessly tro bring you this final season, and we can't wait to share it with you."
Will Sex Education have any spin-offs?
Speaking to Netflix Tudum ahead of the upcoming final season, Laurie touched on the potential for exploring the world of Moordale High, which might mean with a different set of characters.
“I’m definitely taking a break and thinking about other things," she said ahead of season four airing. "But Moordale is a really rich world, and writing about teenagers is always a lot of fun. So, I think that there’s always potential for more to be explored in that world."
Asa Butterfield, who plays Otis, also told Cosmopolitan UK in September 2021 that he would be open to a spin-off - providing it was festive. "[I want a] Christmas movie! Sex Education-themed," he said, before adding, "A spin-off would be good but it has to be well-thought out and really unique and not just for the sake of doing a spin-off."
Yes please.
