It's hard not to get emotionally invested in Love Island when you're watching the contestants on screen each evening, which might be why Ofcom have received so many complaints this year.
According to Daily Star, the government-approved TV regulator have been on the receiving end of hundreds of complaints around the ITV2 show, with one episode in particular hitting a peak.
The report says Love Island viewers complained 541 times in the six-day period between July 6 and July 6, with one episode on July 8 proving the most criticised.
The episode in question featured the 'Line Of Booty' challenge, with involved the women picking a man to kiss at the end of their assault course. Ofcom logged 267 complaints in relation to Hugo Hammond, the show's first physically disabled contestant, being the only male contestant not to be picked for a steamy challenge.
During the same episode, there were 12 complaints which suggested the Black contestants were subject to discriminatory treatment, and 11 complaints about Faye Winter's behaviour.
This comes as Ofcom's director of broadcasting standards Adam Baxter explained how the watchdog was monitoring the ITV2 show to ensure they adhere to duty of care requirements. The spokesperson said,
"We're talking about shows like Love Island that attract a high level of media or social-media interest, involve conflict, emotionally challenging situations, or require a person to disclose life-changing or private aspects of their lives. We have the power in the most serious of cases to fine broadcasters or take away their licence to broadcast."
Love Island continues tonight at ITV2 at 9pm.
