If you’re anything like me, you probably find yourself playing it pretty safe with eyeliners. Sure, I save tons of incredible, colourful eye looks on Instagram but when it comes to doing my own makeup? You can be sure that I will most certainly be sticking to my standard black eyeliner for fear of mixing it up, TYSM. But now, a viral TikTok video posted by influencer Monet McMichael, might have changed all that.
“So I heard from a friend of a friend, if you take some micellar water and you dip it into an eyeshadow, you can make any colour graphic eyeliner," she explains in the video. "If this works, I’m going to be so excited."
While debating whether to go for a baby blue or purple, she dips her brush into an eyeshadow, saying: “I’m literally making water colours!”.
Applying quite possibly some of the smoothest and most even eyeliner flicks we’ve ever seen (that flick of the wrist???), Monet is completely blown away by the results – as are we. Seriously, this has unlocked a whole new world of eyeliner possibilities and we can’t wait to live our best Euphoria-worthy eye makeup looks.
The video, understandably, blew up on TikTok, racking up a casual 16.6million views (and counting…) and is inundated with comments – all sharing the same thoughts:
“Ok…. I NEED TO TRYYYY”
Everyone's clicking on...
“NOW HOLD ONNN”
“my palettes were collecting DUST, u just changed the game 😩”
“😮😮😮 I didn’t know you could do this omg”
“GAME changer”
...basically, TikTok is shook. Even singer Meghan Trainor commented: “Literally held my breath when you did the other eye”.
It makes sense that other big beauty influencers are giving it a go themselves, too. Rose Siard, aka @roseandben, posted a video of herself trialling micellar water mixed with a bright blue eyeshadow.
While she admits, “I do have to keep dipping back into the eyeshadow and micellar water”, Rose says it applies very smoothly and after a few hours, it hadn’t smudged or transferred.
However, some of the comments on Monet’s original video suggest using a facial spray instead as this will make the eyeliner last longer and won’t ruin your eyeshadow in the long run.
One TikTok user wrote: “MUA recommendation here: it's way better to use a fixing spray or makeup diluent. Micellar water is soap, it won't last and it can ruin the eyeshadow”.
Another added: “Girl use a facial spray like Fix+ instead! Micellar water is meant to break down makeup so it may eventually ruin your palette!”
So, if you’re cracking out your eyeshadow palettes to get creative, it might be worth trying this with a setting spray instead.
Either way, I guess it’s time to ditch the black eyeliner...
