Jeffree Star is famous for being oh-so honest when it comes to the newest beauty launches. We've seen him shade Kylie Jenner's £270 brush kit, (likening it to something you could pick up from the 'Dollar Tree'), and then there was the time he savagely came for Huda Beauty on Twitter, accusing her of ripping off indie brand, Beauty Bakerie, with the launch of her new Easy Bake Powder.
When Jeffree reviews a product, you know there are no holds barred, and he's brutally honest about everything from formula to packaging to pricing. But whether you like him or loathe him, when Jeffree talks about makeup, the internet listens.
That's why when I saw him upload a video titled 'The Truth... Fenty Beauty Concealer & Setting Powder', I dropped everything (OK, I paused RuPaul's Drag Race for 5 mins) and watched his review of all the Fenty newness.
Side note: ICYMI, last week Rihanna announced a range of new Fenty Beauty complexion launches on Instagram, including 50 shades of concealer and eight shades of a new setting powder.
Within his video, Jeffree tries out the entire Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Concealer collection, including the concealer itself (£19), two new makeup brushes and two shades of the Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Setting Powder (£24).
When it came to the concealer, Jeffree applied the formula and was instantly impressed with it's brightening effect. He also liked the concealer brush (£19), explaining that "synthetic bristles are not always the best, but the quality of this one is great", he continued to say that it "blended out the concealer really nice".
Speaking of the concealer formula, Jeffree said "I didn't know what to expect, this is Rihanna's first concealer". But as he applied it he was obviously impressed, claiming that it was "easy to blend using both the concealer brush and a damp beauty sponge".
After the concealer, he went on to review the new setting powder (£24) and powder puff setting brush (£26). Throwing a little shade at RiRi for pricing the powder brush £2 more than the actual powder, which retails at £24 whilst the brush costs £26... "The brush is not my favourite thing to put on setting powder with, I prefer more concentrated brushes."
Whilst there was a little inconsistency with the setting powder patching and looking a little dry, when Jeffree applied the powders with a beauty sponge they seemed have a smoother finish.
So, are they Jeffree-approved? Here's his verdict:
Fenty Beauty Pro Filtr Instant Retouch Concealer: YES
"This has been on for hours and hours. Looking at my under eye, this formula is really good. I would suggest to hydrate a little bit more than normal if you're going to use this product. It's not super-drying but it did settle into my fine lines a little."
Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Setting Powder: NO
"There are just so many setting powders out there on the market. I think that the way this settled was weird, I feel like this was the culprit for my under eyes being dry. It's nice but it's a little on the crocodile side."
Fenty Beauty Concealer brush and Setting powder brushes: NO
"I really don't think they are necessary." Says Jeffree, "For the price, this powder brush is not the magical wand that I have been desiring." "They're cute, they're synthetic, they're nice quality, but for the price, any drugstore will give you the exact same quality."
There you have it, the concealer gets a thumbs up but it's hard pass from Jeffree on the rest of the line...
