If there’s one thing I’ve invested more money in than inner peace, it’s the illusion of thicker hair. As someone with strands so fine that my ponytail is that of someone else’s fringe, I’ve long been seduced by any haircut promising “body,” “bounce,” and the sort of volume reserved for Marie Antoinette circa 1778. Relatable, much? Well, look no further than the stacked bob.
Sharp, swishy, and deceptively full-looking, it’s the low-maintenance cut we’re dubbing a big trend this summer season—after all, short hair allows for more neck breeze, and we all know that’s needed in an unair-conditioned Britain.
To get the 411, we consulted hairstylist Lorraine Dublin, who helped us break down exactly what defines the stacked bob and who it suits best, not to mention that we’ve rounded up seven chic inspiration pictures for you to take to your next salon appointment.
What is a stacked bob?
From the feathered bob to the French bob, there are a plethora of styles in Mr. Bob’s arsenal, but the stacked stands out for its unique shape. “The stacked bob is a graduated haircut that is shorter at the back and gradually becomes longer towards the front,” Lorraine says. “The ‘stacking,’” she adds, “refers to the layered shaping at the crown and nape, which creates a rounded silhouette and gives the hair natural lift and structure (aka a stacked effect).”
Unlike a blunt bob, where strands all sit at one uniform length, Lorraine says, “The stacked bob is designed to build movement and volume through the cut itself, making it feel polished but still soft and wearable.”
Who is the stacked bob best suited to?
As we know, certain haircuts can not only work better with certain hair types but flatter certain face shapes, too. Lorraine shares that the stacked bob works particularly well on oval, heart, and longer face shapes. “This is because the rounded shape adds width and balance around the jawline and cheekbones,” she says. If you have a round face, however, fear not, because it can be tailored to suit. Lorraine advises leaving the front sections slightly longer to elongate the face.
In terms of hair type, the stacked bob is especially flattering on fine or medium-density hair. “This is because the layering creates the illusion of fullness and body,” Lorraine tells us, adding that “naturally straight and softly wavy textures tend to showcase the structure of the cut most clearly.” The graduated layers at the back naturally lift the crown, making the hair appear thicker and fuller without relying heavily on styling products.
On curls and coils, Lorraine assures that the cut is absolutely achievable, but requires a different technical approach. “Because coils can shrink between 50 and 80 percent, the cut should be tailored dry so the stylist can work with the hair’s natural movement and shape rather than trying to recreate the sleek finish seen on straighter textures.” Done correctly, the style is one of power and definition.
In terms of maintenance, day-to-day styling can be relatively easy because the shape naturally falls into place. However, Lorraine warns that regular trims are essential to maintain the stacked effect and keep the silhouette sharp. “Most clients will need a refresh every six to eight weeks,” she says.
Textured and coily versions may require more personalised maintenance depending on how much definition or stretch the wearer prefers, but the right shaping can make everyday styling far more manageable.
Lorraine’s top stacked bob styling tip? Enhancing the cut’s built-in structure rather than overworking. Less is more, people!
