Hello everyone who’s spent the past couple weeks watching and rewatching Off Campus: the show almost had an entirely different ending.
Showrunner Louisa Levy told People it was “not always the plan” for Off Campus to end with the introduction of Hunter Davenport, but that the writers "got excited about it because it allowed us to tee up potential future seasons that we might be able to explore. We had a different ending that I can't disclose, because it is a spoiler.”
She added that the Hunter twist was also a way to “tee up a little bit of Dean's backstory that we might be able to get into in future seasons as well. Because Hunter is in The Score. He is in that book, just in a small way. Being able to pull from the later books and maybe use those characters to build out the initial four books was a fun opportunity.”
FYI, there’s still plenty of mystery surrounding Hunter thanks to the fact that in the novels, he’s simply introduced as a teammate in Dean’s book The Score before getting his own breakout book called The Play in the Briar U series. In the show, Hunter and Allie hook up—making things tense when it’s revealed that he and Dean have some unresolved history that has something to do with Dean’s sister, Summer.
Meanwhile, Louisa Levy revealed that the cast and crew had to keep the Hunter twist under lock and key, saying “That was the freaking nuclear codes. We needed to not talk about that. No one was allowed to know who that man was, which was hilarious. We weren't allowed to follow him [on social media]. We weren't allowed to look at him on the sidewalk. We weren't allowed to do a freaking thing with that man.”
