Outlander has officially entered its longest, most permanent Droughtlander—the show finished its eight-season run today. We won’t spoil the final minutes of the show itself here (many fans were waiting with baited breath to see who would live and who would die, and we’ll save that for another post) but there is a special treat after the credits that we do need to talk about. Shockingly, the Outlander series finale has a post-credits scene. What is this, the MCU? But let’s break it down.

What happens in the post-credits scene?

The scene opens in a book store in more modern times. An older lady puts a stack of Outlander books down on a table. Real-life author Diana Gabaldon is doing a book signing!

“That’s my third copy,” a fan says as Diana goes to sign the book. As Diana’s making out the inscription to the fan’s daughter, the fan sees a notebook sitting on the table. The notebook looks pretty familiar to eagle-eyed fans. It’s Claire’s!

“Miss Gabaldon,” the fan says, “I noticed this notebook at your last signing. May I ask what it is?”
“Well, it’s just a wee bit of inspiration,” Diana replies.

What does it mean!?

The implication here is that Claire was a real person, she left her notebook behind, and Diana used is as the foundations of what would become the popular book series. While certainly just a little Easter egg for fans, it is fun to imagine Claire and Jamie being real people, with the ability to time travel. If only! I’d fly myself right out of 2026, that’s for sure.

But it makes sense for the show to give Diana a moment in the spotlight here in the finale, considering she is the primary reason the show exists in the first place. Without her, we wouldn’t have Jamie and Claire in the first place.
