After two years away, it’s finally time to return to Middle-earth for the second season of Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, where we’ll be reunited with Galadriel, the Brandyfoot family, the Stranger, Arondir, and—of course—Sauron. But one character we won’t be meeting in this series is Galadriel’s husband Celeborn. And now, Morfydd Clark, who plays Galadriel, has explained why her on-screen husband is quite literally MIA.
FYI, The Rings of Power is a prologue series to the original The Lord of the Rings franchise by J.R.R. Tolkien and is set 1,000 years before the events of the book. It partially follows the story of a young Galadriel, who is played by Cate Blanchett in the original movie series.
In season 1, many fans expected to see Galadriel’s husband, the elf Celeborn, who is known for being one of the wisest elves. In the movie trilogy, Marton Csokas played Celeborn, but his scenes were cut due to time restrictions. And so, with the new series detailing Galadriel’s beginnings, it was presumed we would see the couple together.
How-ev-er (!!!), in season 1, Galadriel reveals they got married before the second age *and* that Celeborn went with the elves to fight Morgoth. He was ultimately presumed to be dead as he never returned from battle.
But given we know he’s alive in the novel, many fans have been confused as to why he’s been missing from the series...or why his story has been altered so much from the canon.
A reminder that the couple also has a daughter named Celebrían, who (spoiler alert) eventually marries Elrond and is also unseen thus far. So if the story is to align with the canon, then at some point, Celeborn has to return so the couple can have their daughter.
Enter: Morfydd Clark, who plays Galadriel, addressing her missing on-screen husband. During a convo with Dexerto ahead of the season 2 release, Clark hinted that Celeborn is still alive in the series.
“Well…we know Celeborn is out there,” she said before adding, “We can tell Galadriel is feeling a lot of pain for not being with Celeborn, and that this was a terrible loss to her, and I hope that they shall be reunited.”
We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that Galadriel will get that long-awaited reunion this season—or in a potential season 3.
The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 is available on Prime Video beginning August 29.
