If you have accidentally ended up on Film Twitter at any point in the last few years, you're probably aware that A24 is the reigning champion of Cool Indie Film. The company has produced Oscar winners like Moonlight and nostalgic favorites like Lady Bird and Eighth Grade, and have championed some of the most exciting up-and-coming filmmakers working right now. But what are the best of the A24 movies? That's a nearly impossible question to answer, but I've picked my favorite 10. Asking me to rank these 10 movies in 1-10 order, though, would be like asking me to rank my own children (I don't have any, but that's besides the point), so in no particular order, here they are:
The Farewell
Awkwafina shows off her dramatic acting chops in this movie, which follows her and her family as they visit her grandmother in China one last time before she dies.
Minari
A24 has a knack for producing movies that feature adorable child performances, and Alan Kim's performance as David is just one of the powerful parts of this movie.
Moonlight
Fair warning: this movie will emotionally wreck you. It follows Chiron, a young Black man, through three phases of his life as he explores his own sexuality in a community that values heteronormativity.
Lady Bird
This movie is great for so many reasons, and one of them is that we were gifted our generation's version of the Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet friendship with Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet.
Everything Everywhere All at Once
This movie takes the idea of a multiverse and uses it expertly to ask the question: What if our lives had actually played out in one of the 123 other ways it could have gone if we had just made one decision differently?
Eighth Grade
This movie captures the intense awkwardness of being a middle schooler better than anything I've ever seen. Elsie K. Fisher will break your heart and make you remember why you like being an adult (in a good way).
Hereditary
Hereditary walked so Midsommar could run. Toni Collette gives an incredible performance in this scary as hell movie about a family trying to get answers after their mother/grandmother dies.
The Florida Project
Yes, you do need to watch a movie where Willem Dafoe's character becomes an unlikely father figure to Brooklynn Prince's character, who lives in the motel he manages. This sun-soaked movie understands the value of found-family.
Uncut Gems
The most stressful movie you will ever watch, TBH. And I say that as a compliment. Adam Sandler is a jeweler with a gambling problem in this high-stakes drama.
The Last Black Man in San Francisco
Jonathan Majors, be still my heart. This movie follows a man named Jimmie Fails and his best friend (played by Majors) who try to reclaim an old Victorian home in San Francisco that Fails' grandfather built.
