Nicole Kidman is the busiest woman in Hollywood, full-stop. Between the stylists activated for press tours and the entertainment writers (that's us) tracking her movements, this woman is generating her own freestanding economy. In the last year alone, she has starred in at least three television series and five films, with multiple projects coming down the pipe, including a new season of Big Little Lies (allegedly) and a long-awaited sequel to Practical Magic, her 1998 film with Sandra Bullock.

Her latest project is Holland, a mystery thriller about a teacher and certified Lady of the House in an IRL small Michigan town called, you guessed it, Holland. Her husband is played by none other than Mr. Darcy—or Tom Wamnsgans, depending on your style— Matthew Macfadyen.

Their town is eerily perfect—a la Stepford or Don’t Worry Darling’s town of Victory—and centered around a Dutch-themed attraction. Surrounding our girl Nancy, we’ve got her son, played by Irish boy of the month Jude Hill, and her close confidant, played by Gael García Bernal. Plus: a Rachel Sennott cameo. We are not worthy!

The film comes from director Mimi Cave, the name behind the 2022 sleeper hit Fresh, starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar Jones. So, we can add Mimi Cave to the list of female directors Kidman has worked with since her 2017 pledge to collaborate with a female director every 18 months. This list includes Halina Reijn (Babygirl), Lulu Wang (Expats), Susanne Bier (The Perfect Couple and The Undoing), Andrea Arnold (Big Little Lies), and more. We digress, back to Holland.

Holland’s town of Holland is built on a facade, laying a perfect thematic foundation for a film about artifice. Nancy’s husband Fred spends his free time in the basement toying with a model train set, a massive recreation of the very town they live in. He routinely travels for business—strange for an optometrist—which sets Nancy off on a hunt for the mistress she believes he is visiting. Chaos and investigation ensues, but far be it from us to spoil a flick. That’s all for now.

How Can I Watch Holland?

Homebodies rejoice, Holland can be streamed from your couch. The film arrives on Amazon Prime Video on March 27, skipping the theater run altogether after premiering at South by Southwest on March 9.

If you’re holding space for the dark comedy, let Holland be just the beginning. Films with a similar flavor include the aforementioned The Stepford Wives and Don’t Worry Darling, as well as hits like Pleasantville, The Truman Show, and American Beauty.
