If you were a kid who made a fuss over the non-Barbie-doll section of the toy store (hello, 7-year-old me!), you should sit down for this piece of news: Thanks to our good friends at Mattel, we’re about to get ourselves a live-action movie based on Polly Pocket! Which, okay, is a potentially confusing concept for a movie. But in the age where *everything* is coming to life (do I even need to mention Barbie?), it’s pretty cute!
Lucky for us internet-savvy folks, we have deets about what to expect from this upcoming film. You might be surprised by who’s attached, and that alone is enough for me to change my outfit, tease my hair into a perfect ponytail, and wait for this movie to hit theaters.
Here’s what we know about Polly Pocket so far:
First of all, let’s discuss the movie plot
Here’s the official statement from Entertainment Weekly about the Polly Pocket movie’s premise:
“A basic description for the film notes the story follows ‘a young girl and a pocket-sized woman who form a friendship.’”
I might be the only person thinking this, but…is anyone else instantly reminded of that old-school Lindsay Lohan film Life-Size?
Okay, cool. Who is in the Polly Pocket cast?
In some major casting news, the lady portraying Polly Pocket is none other than Emily in Paris star Lily Collins!
As Lily wrote on her IG, she’s a superfan of the toy, so this is “a real dream come true” for her. And since she’s also producing the movie (what can’t she do?), it makes sense that she’s so stoked about it.
Multihyphenate Lena Dunham (you know, the brain behind HBO’s Girls) was originally writing and directing the movie but revealed she was no longer part of the project during a July 2024 interview with The New Yorker. "I’m not going to make the Polly Pocket movie. I wrote a script, and I was working on it for three years," she said, adding that she wants her next movie to be something only she can make.
"And I think Greta managed this incredible feat, which was to make this thing that was literally candy to so many different kinds of people and was perfectly and divinely Greta," she said, praising Greta Gerwig's Barbie. "And I just—I felt like, unless I can do it that way, I’m not going to do it. I don’t think I have that in me. I feel like the next movie I make needs to feel like a movie that I absolutely have to make. No one but me could make it. And I did think other people could make Polly Pocket." Mattel and MGM haven't revealed a new director for Polly just yet, but we'll be keeping an eye out for the latest updates.
She previously told Variety in 2021, “Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me—Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it’s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director.”
So what’s the premiere date?
Good Q! Unfortunately, no formal announcement has been made about a Polly Pocket release date.
Since the movie plans were announced back in 2021, we've gotten one update from Lena in October 2022, when she confirmed she was wrapping up her second draft of the script: “We have a lot of fun with the idea of what happens when a small person encounters a big world,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “Let’s just say Polly Pocket was at her best when she was the original teensy tiny ’90s size,” she added when asked about the doll size. “They made her a little bigger now, which I support, because of choking hazards. But I’m writing ’90s tiny.”
Thank you! Now how about a trailer?
That’s a hard no too. But keep on the lookout, because it’s sure to be a quirky yet delightful movie! At least, that’s what we’re hoping!
