• Adam Sandler wore a bright orange and blue Knicks sweatsuit to Netflix’s Office Romance premiere on May 26, supporting both his wife Jackie and the team’s first NBA Finals appearance in 27 years.
  • The casual outfit sparked online debate, with critics pointing out the stark contrast to Jackie’s sleek black ensemble and questioning gendered double standards in red carpet fashion.
  • Supporters defended Sandler’s signature “Sandlercore” athleisure style, citing his down-to-earth personality and occasional formal appearances at prestigious events like the Golden Globes.

Aside from his Saturday Night Live era and generational run of comedy films over the years, Adam Sandler is probably definitely most known for his laid-back approach to red carpet dressing. He’s been rocking baggy tees, basketball shorts, and sweatsuits since the ’90s, but it wasn’t until the 2020s that his signature style was dubbed “Sandlercore,” and the rest was history. But now, the internet is seemingly divided by his latest outfit at the premiere of Netflix’s new rom-com, Office Romance, on Tuesday, May 26.

He pulled up to the red carpet in a bright orange and blue sweatsuit as a nod to the New York Knicks making the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years…and to support his wife, Jackie Sandler, who stars alongside Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein in the flick.

Of course, this was a pretty stark contrast to Jackie’s sleek all-black outfit, which featured a keyhole detail and slight sparkles. So people had a lot to say about it online.

“It must be so cool to be a man and be allowed to look like shit,” one person wrote on Reddit, pointing out the double standard between him and his wife’s outfits. Someone else echoed that sentiment, slamming Sandler and writing, “This is one of the reasons why I’ve been so annoyed with this asshole. The gendered exceptionalism is so grating.”

Others came to the actor’s defense, as he’s pulled off athleisure at events in the past—including his daughters’ movie premieres.

“He never once said he’s disinterested or has ever acted like it. He just doesn’t want to wear a suit,” someone said, while another said, in part, “I’ve met him multiple times through a friend that worked for Happy Madison and he’s as down to earth as anyone I’ve ever met. Very generous, very low-key. Knows his all his employees by name and remembers the names of their friends and even extended family. Never wants to be a bother or need any extra attention.”

That’s not to say the Uncut Gems star doesn’t clean up nicely. When he’s not wearing cozy clothes, Adam occasionally pops out in semiformal attire—and formal-formal attire—at more coveted events like the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and Golden Globes.

All that to say…people are upset about Adam Sandler being Adam Sandler? Groundbreaking.
