• Scarlett Johansson didn’t attend the May 16 premiere of her movie, Paper Tiger, at Cannes Film Festival.
  • The director of the movie called her on FaceTime during the movie’s standing 7- minute ovation, but she didn’t answer.
  • Scarlett is currently filing the reboot for The Exorcist.

Another year, another reason to obsess over pretty dresses and overly long standing ovations at the Cannes Film Festival. While so many of your red carpet faves were in attendance this year (love you, Simone Ashley and Odessa A’zion), there was one major A-lister who was noticeably absent, despite having a movie that premiered at the event: Scarlett Johansson.

For the premiere of Paper Tiger, Scarlett’s co-stars Adam Driver and Miles Teller posed for photos on the red carpet on May 16 for the screening alongside director James Gray and the film’s entire production team. Scarlett, however, was nowhere to be found.

Inside the event, Paper Tiger got a seven-minute standing ovation following the screening. Gray was seen inside of the screening attempting to FaceTime Scarlett during the ovation, but she did not pick up.

According to Variety, Scarlett “couldn’t be on hand in the South of France because she is busy filming The Exorcist reboot.” Not entirely sure why she didn’t pick up the director’s phone call, but it is worth noting that the film premiered early in the afternoon in France, which has an eight-to-nine-hour time difference from Los Angeles, where she is based…so there is a chance Gray called her at like five in the morning (I wouldn’t pick up either, LOL).

Scarlett’s lack of attendance at the Paper Tiger premiere in Cannes doesn’t mean she isn’t promoting the movie at all, though—she gushed about her character, Hester, in the movie during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

I liked the idea of Hester being feminine and soft and graceful because she has a lot of chutzpah inside her,” she said. “She loves fashion magazines and going to the movies—she loves romantic comedies and all things romantic—and window shopping. All of those things are such an important part of who she is and how she presents herself. She should be in the middle of her life and striving for more—vivacious and full of life. That’s how I envisioned her.”

No drama to see here!
