Who attacked Ariana Grande at the Wicked premiere?
The fan who attacked Ariana Grande on the red carpet has been revealed as Johnson Wen.
Who is Johnson Wen?
Johnson Wen is the 26-year-old fan who attacked Ariana Grande at the Wicked: For Good premiere in Singapore. He has posted about the incident on his own socials, where he describes himself as “Troll Most Hated.”
In one Instagram Story, Johnson said he “finally met Ariana Grande tonight” as he posed in front of a Wicked movie promotional sign. Elsewhere on his Story, Wen shared the viral video of himself running towards Ariana on the red carpet, and described himself as a “crazy fan.”
He also posted a video of the incident to his main feed. “Dear Ariana Grande thank you for letting me jump on the yellow carpet with you,” he wrote in the caption.
This is not the first time Johnson has done something like this. On his Instagram, Johnson has shared clips of similar incidents. In one post on his feed, Johnson can be seen disrupting Katy Perry’s Sydney concert by jumping on stage. He did the same in December last year, rushing on stage at The Chainsmokers’ concert.
Has Johnson Wen been arrested?
Johnson posted on his Instagram Story on Thursday, November 13 that he was arrested but has since been released. “I’m free after being arrested,” he wrote on a video of himself in a public setting.
Despite his release, the BBC reported that on Friday, November 14, Johnson was charged with being a public nuisance by a Singapore court. The BBC said Johnson, who was unrepresented at court, intends to plead guilty. If found guilty, he may be fined up to S$2000, which is roughly equivalent to $1,540.
How have Ariana Grande’s co-stars reacted to the attack?
In response to the attack on Ariana, her co-stars have jumped to her defense—both in person, like Cynthia, and online. On TikTok, Marissa Bode (who plays Nessarose Thropp) commented on the parasocial relationships many fans have with celebrities, and highlighted how Ariana’s boundaries had been disrespected.
“Social media brings out the worst in people,” she said, alluding to Johnson’s repeat pattern of this type of behavior. “Did you get your views? Did you get your likes? Guess what you also did... You made someone feel incredibly unsafe.”
Marissa’s thoughts were echoed by Ariana’s fans online. “So this a sick hobby of yours wtf?!” someone commented on one of Johnson’s videos, as another wrote: “Stop doing this, this is weird and dangerous behavior.”
“Oh wow so you do this a lot… how aren’t you in jail?” a third fan commented on Johnson’s video attacking Ariana, as another asked: “Why is this person allowed to continually post videos of himself assaulting/harassing people? It’s distressing and disgusting.”
Others called out how “traumatizing” the incident might have been for Ariana, who has previously spoken about experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder after a suicide bomb attack at the end of her May 2017 concert in Manchester, which killed 22 people and injured hundreds. So far, she’s yet to comment on the red carpet incident from this week.
