Though they finalized their divorce in 2022, Kristin Cavallari and her ex, Jay Cutler, are in the thick of some messy drama—and it involves money. The former couple (who share three children together) quietly called it quits in 2020 after seven years of marriage. At the time, Kristin announced their breakup with an Instagram post, writing, “We have nothing but love and respect for one another and are deeply grateful for the years shared, memories made, and the children we are so proud of. This is just the situation of two people growing apart.”
Things seemed pretty amicable for a while, with Kristin even referring to Jay as “the best” in a Father’s Day tribute following their split. But things took a turn recently when The Hills alum alleged she had “never gotten a penny” from her ex-husband in the aftermath of their split. Now, Jay is firing back at the claim and external sources are getting involved. It’s a lot, so here’s a breakdown of the recent developments in Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler’s divorce money drama.
It all started when Kristin claimed she “got no money” in her divorce from Jay.
During the June 18 episode of Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour, Kristin finally addressed speculation surrounding the former NFL quarterback’s involvement in her jewelry brand, Uncommon James. According to her: He had nothing to do with the brand or its success.
“Our revenue is close to $50 million a year,” she said during the episode, per People, “but because I was obviously a WAG—athletes’ wives and girlfriends, if you’re not familiar—people love to say that everything I have in my life is because of my ex-husband, and that my ex-husband funded Uncommon James.”
She went on to add that no only did Jay not fund her company—he’d never given her any money, period. “But I am, to this day, 100 percent owner, and I’ve never taken any outside funding,” she continued. “I have never gotten a penny from my ex-husband. I didn’t get any money from our divorce, so let’s just clear that up.”
Oh, and she doubled down on those claims on the June 24 episode of her Let’s Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari podcast, reiterating, “Everyone thinks that my ex-husband gave me money. I didn’t get any money.”
Jay entered the chat 2 months later, calling her claims “completely false.”
During the August 15 episode of the Take It Outside podcast, the former Chicago Bears player addressed Kristin’s claims that she got no money in their divorce. According to him: It was “reckless” of her to discuss the terms of their divorce so publicly, especially since her claims were “completely false.”
“In the state of Tennessee, if we would have went to the judge and been like, ‘Hey, he’s going to keep every single dollar over the past seven years and you’re going to get nothing,’ there’s not a judge in the state of Tennessee that would have signed that,” he said. “They would be like, ‘No, this isn’t—this isn’t right. This isn’t legal. Not happening.’ So, there’s that.”
He continued, “She has a lawyer. I have a lawyer. Is her lawyer really going to be like, ‘Fine, you get zero dollars. He gets to keep all the money that was made over the seven years’? Absolutely not.”
And he wasn’t done there! “I think it’s borderline slander to insinuate that there was zero dollars split during the marriage that each side got,” he added. “It’s insanity. It’s completely false, completely untrue... I’m not going to get into those exact numbers, but I can guarantee you it’s definitely not zero dollars.”
A source has weighed in on the situation, and they think Jay “manipulated” Kristin’s statement.
Yep. An insider “close to the former couple’s relationship” gave People some insight into everything. They told the outlet that Jay’s outburst is “a standard gaslighting tactic from a known narcissist.”
Per the source: “His answer was manipulated into something completely different than what Kristin was initially saying.”
Kristin has yet to respond to Jay’s podcast rant, but you better believe we’re waiting for her rebuttal.
