Every year, the world gifts us at least one extremely confusing and unexpected celebrity relationship (still recovering from Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet), and in 2025, that honor went to Katy "Space!!!!" Perry and former Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau.
The burgeoning maybe-couple were papped having dinner, then they were spotted having another dinner, then a source came through with more intel than we were emotionally prepared for, and now that these two have been going strong for nearly a year (!!), we need a timeline to sort it all out. Ahem:
August 2023
Justin and his wife, Sophie, announce their separation after 18 years of marriage. "Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate," Justin wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post. "As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build."
~flash forward two years~
July 2025
After weeeeeeks of rumors, Katy and Orlando confirm their relationship is over, giving a statement to Us Weekly. Ahem:
"Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on coparenting. They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter with love, stability and mutual respect."
Later that same month—after meeting at "an event," per The Sun—Katy and Justin are spotted on a dinner date in Canada. TMZ publishes the news (and photos) one day later on July 29, noting that they had cocktails and lobster at "a swanky restaurant in Montreal."
The next day, TMZ drops more pics of Justin and Katy, only this time they're in different outfits? Which seems to indicate that they actually went out twice? Either that or they changed on the same date night.
That very! same! day! The Sun manages to get ahold of not one, but two of "Trudeau's close associates" who are more than happy to spill. Things we learned, in list form:
- "He likes her personality, and they are two people who really enjoy chatting about different topics."
- "They click very well so far."
- "They are going to see each other again very soon."
- "Whatever happens, happens."
- "He is feeling that talking to her and getting to know her is very refreshing, like a breath of fresh air in his life."
- "He was happy to connect with her so well."
- "She appreciates him being a normal, respectful person who was very understanding of her recent separation with Orlando Bloom."
- "He isn’t the kind of guy that would rush things, and she seems to enjoy that a lot."
- "He took her on a date, and he was very, very excited to do so."
- He "kept talking about it in the last few days."
- "He feels like a young adult again."
- "He is very excited about the process so far."
- "He really enjoys to get to know her [sic] and to talk about many, many topics with her."
- "Justin wants to keep getting to know her and see how it goes."
- "He is not scared of her being a superstar, and the extra attention that brings."
- "He is ready to start another serious relationship."
And just a day after THAT, Justin is spotted watching Katy perform and sings along to "Firework."
What a month!
August 2025
A source tells the Daily Mail that Justin and Katy have cooled off.
"I know for a fact that Justin wasn't thrilled about the pictures getting out," they explain. "It was a first date. A first date! And these pictures came out and it became this huge thing, which is not what he seems to have wanted. Katy didn't seem to care nearly as much, but he was the one who was bothered. It didn't chase him away or anything, but it wasn't ideal."
The insider adds that "if you're going to be with Katy, you have to deal with the paparazzi and the fallout. I don't know how prepared he was for that. It can be a lot and it can be overwhelming."
In conclusion: "She's busy, he's busy. They have a lot going on, and the newness has worn off. But there's nothing negative about it. They just aren't in constant communication anymore. That could change, but for now, it is what it is. It has cooled off. They still have nothing bad to say about each other, and in fact I feel like she's been saying really nice things about him."
September 2025
Aaaaand they're back! A source for Us Weekly claims Katy and Justin are “still speaking and are very interested in each other” but making an effort to keep things “private” for now.
A second insider notes that the two aren’t “serious,” in large part because Justin is a politician and Katy is “extremely busy right now” on her Lifetimes Tour. That said, the two are planning to see each other in person in a few weeks after Katy wraps her Brazil tour dates. “Katy is taking it day by day but is very open to dating,” they add.
October 2025
These two are still going strong! A source tells the Daily Mail that "Katy is very, very interested in him. She says he's a real catch, a high-quality guy. She keeps a lot of details to herself, but she clearly still likes him a lot."
The insider adds, "They just are so busy and in different cities, so they aren't physically together. But if there's anyone worth having a long-distance relationship with, it's him. She likes him a lot. He likes her a lot. I'd even say they're enamored."
Soon after, the Daily Mail ~officially reveals~ that Katy and Justin are dating after pics of the couple making out on a yacht off Santa Barbara emerge. Major! Per an eyewitness: "She pulled up her boat next to a small public whale-watching boat, then they started making out. I didn’t realize who she was with until I saw the tattoo on the guy’s arm and I immediately realized it was Justin Trudeau.”
A source for The Sun also offers some new insight, saying, “They haven’t been able to spend a lot of time together as she’s on tour, but they’re constantly in contact—always FaceTiming and messaging each other.”
And to cap off the month: Katy and Justin make their first public appearance while celebrating Katy's 41st birthday in Paris!
Oh, and Justin dresses up as Left Shark (iconic) for Halloween.
December 2025
Katy and Justin grab lunch with the former Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, who posts a pic with the two on social media, even referring to Katy as Justin’s “partner,” according to X’s translation.

A source provides a lil update on Katy and Justin’s ’ship to the Daily Mail, saying, “Justin and Katy's relationship is going great. Nobody actually believed it was ever going to be a thing, and now that it is, everyone wants them to get married and have children.”
They go on to add, “There have been rumors recently that Katy is pregnant, but she is not. She’s not against it, but they are just in a euphoric honeymoon phase and enjoying life together with the children they already have from their previous relationships.”
