Zendaya made a grand return to the MET staircase tonight after a five-year hiatus and delivered not one but two stunners. And her second look—a vintage Givenchy by John Galliano from 1996—is by far my favorite fashion moment of the entire night. As Cosmopolitan's fashion director, I saw a lot of standouts at this event, but Zendaya's interpretation of the theme takes the cake, and we should talk about why. (Also worth mentioning? Zendaya wore a vintage Galliano to Anna Wintour’s pre-MET dinner. Perhaps a carefully placed Easter egg from Law Roach?)
The theme of this year’s MET is "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" while the dress code is "The Garden of Time." Zendaya’s Victorian taffeta gown and vintage floral headpiece are a perfect nod to both theme and dress code.
The Philip Treacy couture headpiece from 2007, a literal bouquet of brightly colored roses, was the highlight of this show-stopping look. Zendaya's glam was minimal and effortless which I think paired nicely with the grandness of the fashion.
Some of my other favorite details include a sweeping train, off the shoulder silhouette, and corseted peplum. It’s giving a nod to saloon and just a hint of Marie Antoinette.
According to the New York Times, Zendaya purchased her second look of the evening at Beverly Hills vintage boutique, Lily et Cie. While it is customary for a designer to loan for the MET Gala, in this case the styling duo might have fallen in love with a vintage find. We love a resourceful girlie. Well done, Zendaya and Law!
