If you’re planning your next summer holiday, achieving a sun-kissed glow is likely on the agenda. But if you’d rather skip the UV exposure, the best facial tanning drops are an easy way to fake a golden glow.

Are tanning drops good for your skin?

You might be wondering why you can’t simply use your body tanner on your face. The answer is that facial tanning drops are specifically formulated to deliver both glow and skincare benefits. Think of them as your daily serum, with added bronzing power.

Skincare Expert, Michaella Bolder, explains: "Face tanners are designed specifically for the face as they contain skincare level ingredients targeted to help treat our daily concerns and strengthen the skin's barrier, as well as add a natural golden finish, rather than a deeper tan result found in body products."

Some tried-and-tested facial tanners now include favourites like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and vitamin C.
They won’t replace your serums, but they do add hydration while the DHA develops – dihydroxyacetone, the key active ingredient in tanning drops.

They’re also suitable for a variety of skin types, and can deliver a streak-free finish even on dehydrated skin. Michaella adds: “If you have dry skin, I’d suggest applying a light, oil-free moisturiser after you tan to buffer the depth of colour for a more natural glow. You can also mix the drops with moisturiser and use a large foundation brush to blend, which helps prevent the colour settling into fine lines or causing patchiness.

Facial fake tans can also be used on a variety of skin tone. On fair skin tones, tanning drops will deliver a sun-kissed glow, while on deeper complexions, they’ll balance uneven tone and boost the skin’s natural glow.

To find the tanning drops that provided the perfect bronze, we thoroughly tested them out. Scroll down to see the ones that passed the hype test and are worthy of your money.

How do you apply tanning drops?

If your previous fake tan experience is buffing away with a tanning mitt for hours on end, tanning drops will be a real game-changer.

Here are Bolder's tips for a fool-proof application:"Squeeze 2-6 drops into the palm of your hand, then sweep around your face using two fingers as you would your serum. Wait a few moments before applying your moisturiser. You can also combine the tonic drops with your daily moisturiser for a lighter finish."

While exfoliating with your trusted AHA or BHA toner is great for getting rid of any dead skin cells for a flawless application, it's important to wait a few hours – or overnight – before applying your tanning drops over the top.

"Avoid using any exfoliating products before applying tan. It is not advisable to use any tanning solution in conjunction with vitamin A or retinol," says Bolder.

What’s the difference between tanning drops and bronzing drops?

Tanning drops and bronzing drops are often used interchangeably, but they actually deliver very different results. Bronzing drops are typically packed with golden pigments suspended in a silky, hydrating base, delivering an instant wash of bronze. They’re a great option if you need a last-minute glow, as the pigment washes off at the end of the day with your regular cleanser.

Tanning drops, on the other hand, offer a longer-lasting result that develops over time. While bronzing drops usually contain light-reflecting pigments for an instant glow, tanning drops are typically matte and work by gradually building a colour that mimics a natural, sun-kissed tan.
