12 Coconut Perfumes That Make Every Day Feel Like Vacation

As someone who’d happily spend every day at the beach, I’ve spent years testing coconut scents that bottle up that sun-soaked feeling. These are my all-time favorites.

By ,

Everyone has their happy place, and mine happens to be the beach. There’s nothing more relaxing to me than smelling the salty air, digging my toes into the sand, and feeling a fresh breeze tickling my skin. And there’s one perfume note that always transports me there: coconut. On days when a beach feels a million miles away (literally and figuratively), a spritz of a coconut perfume can give me a mini mental vacation. That’s why they’re my go-to scents all summer long.

A sneak peek at a few of my favorite coconut perfumes:

The best thing about coconut perfumes is that there is one out there for everyone—no matter your fragrance tastes or budget. Though coconut is often associated with sweet scents, there are sophisticated options that even veer into the avant-garde, ranging from full-on gourmands to lush green notes that evoke tropical dreams.

Pros

  • Eco-friendly bottle is refillable and made from glass and aluminum
  • Clean formula

Cons

  • Some reviewers said it changed too much as it dried down

You know when you’re walking along the beach and a perfectly faded piece of sea glass washes ashore? That’s exactly what this smells like. I loved searching for them as a kid, and this is the grown-up version of that adventure. Essentially ocean-worn blue glass in olfactive form, it’s a coconut take on a skin scent. The blend of coconut nectar, ylang ylang, and sandalwood creates a slightly sweet, cozy seaside vibe.

Best Coconut Perfume for People Who Don’t Typically Like Coconut

Heretic Dirty Coconut Eau de Parfum

Pros

  • Made with natural ingredients
  • Unique take on coconut perfume

Cons

  • Natural formula doesn’t last as long

When you want to smell like Lydia Deetz at the beach (possibly the person I’d most want to hang out with under a black beach umbrella), this is the scent for you. Essentially a gothic spin on a coconut perfume, true to its name, it smells like a naughty version of the genre—a little spice, a little deeper, a little more mysterious. Paired with unexpected notes like cedar and vanilla derived from clove, it’s the perfect way to add a sultry twist to a basic coconut perfume.

Best Creamy Coconut Perfume

Miu Miu Fleur de Lait Eau de Parfum

Fleur de Lait Eau de Parfum

Pros

  • Sweet yet sophisticated
  • Has staying power

Cons

  • Projection isn’t as strong

Got milk? This floral tropical take on a coconut perfume certainly does. I’ve long been a fan of the Miu Miu scents, and this is my favorite yet. Delightfully creamy, it’s delicious yet still delicate. It smells like eating a refreshing, fruity dessert out of a coconut shell on a beach in Thailand while you can feel the sun on your shoulders.

Best Coconut Body Mist

eos Cashmere Body Mist Beach Waves

Cashmere Body Mist Beach Waves

Pros

  • Hydrating formula
  • Can also be applied to hair and clothes

Cons

  • Format isn’t as long-lasting

Mist this on and it will indeed feel like you swam out to a coconut grove on your beach vacation. (Hey, a girl can dream.) It’s bright, airy, and breezy, like the perfect day spent at the shoreline. It’s just sweet enough without being cloying. Even better, it’ll make your skin feel as good as it smells, since it leaves skin hydrated and soft, courtesy of hyaluronic acid, aloe, and glycerin. It can also be spritzed onto your hair or clothes, and since it’s a lightweight body mist, I spray it all over to smell like a pina colada cloud.

Best Nostalgic Coconut Perfume

Vacation Eau de Toilette Perfume

Now 15% Off

Pros

  • Transportive and nostalgic
  • The most realistic coconut perfume on this list

Cons

  • Plastic note is overpowering to some testers

Ever hear of those lamps designed to beat seasonal blues? Well, if you’re not into basking in front of bright lights, consider this mood booster in a bottle. With notes of coconut milk, banana, and pineapple—alongside more unexpected hints of plastic and pool water (!!!)—this eau de toilette transports me to a pool deck sipping a pina colada. Some reviewers, however, say that this is akin to glorified sunscreen, and if you aren’t into that smell, this might not be your cup of tea.

The 7 Virtues Coconut Sun Eau de Parfum

Coconut Sun Eau de Parfum

Pros

  • Cruelty-free and women-owned (!)
  • Coconut note is extremely prevalent, which I love

Cons

  • Some reviewers said it was too similar to other coconut fragrances

IMO, this is perhaps the purest coconut fragrance on my list. While I typically don't favor coconut as a standalone note, this one blends perfectly with my skin and body chemistry. It’s sweet, but not overly so. I also gotta mention, I love the story behind this woman-owned brand. Following her friend's injury in the army, founder Barb Stegemann vowed to carry forward his mission of peace, leading to the creation of The 7 Virtues and their motto: "Make Perfume Not War."

Replica Beach Walk Eau de Toilette

Pros

  • It truly smells like the beach

Cons

  • Some testers said it smells a little basic now (but FYI, this is the O.G. sunscreen scent)

Let me tell you, the hype surrounding this scent is completely justified! I don't think any fragrance has ever embodied its name as perfectly as this one does: It's pure nostalgia in a bottle. Imagine a picture-perfect beach day in August, with a gentle breeze that carries hints of sunscreen combined with the salty ocean air. With notes like bergamot, coconut milk, and musk, it veers more fresh and green than sickly-sweet.

The bottle has a permanent spot in my toiletry bag, since it's my favorite fragrance to carry with me on all my summer getaways. Fair warning: As an eau de toilette, this fragrance has moderate longevity on the skin. However, you can extend its wear time by spritzing a bit onto your clothing, as fabric tends to retain the scent longer.

Rio Radiance Hair and Body Fragrance Mist

Pros

  • Comes in a large 8.1 oz bottle
  • Lasts surprisingly long for a body spray, per testers

Cons

  • May be too sweet for some

If you want to extend your beach day (sans the heat and sand), spritz on some of this body spray. With notes of coconut milk and sand (yup, sand!), it's beachy and tropical without smelling too much like sunscreen, IMO. It's a body mist instead of an EDP, so it wears off faster than a rich, full-bodied perfume would; however, I get about six hours of this scent when I spray it all over my clothes and on top of Sol De Janeiro Bum Bum cream. The sweet, almond scent of the Bum Bum cream mixes with the already creamy vanilla, making it extra delectable.

Best Luxury Coconut Perfume

Tom Ford Soleil Blanc Eau de Parfum

Pros

  • Light scent that's great for the office or sensitive noses
  • Comes in a bunch of sizes depending on your budget

Cons

  • I wish it lasted a bit longer

A much more modest and sophisticated take on a coconut perfume would be this one from Tom Ford’s private blend collection. I’m not quite sure if it’s the pistachio or just the overall blend of notes—this one is really layered with 'em—but all that really stands out to me is a nutty, semi-sweet coconut aroma. The dry-down is fairly subtle and sticks close to the skin, which makes it really nice for a more professional setting. This is my go-to in-office scent to wear during the summer months!

FWIW, beauty editor Beth Gillette is obsessed with the body oil version of this perfume. "It lasts so much longer on my skin, surprisingly, and is way easier to travel with," she says.

Best Earthy Coconut Perfume

Byredo Velvet Haze Eau de Parfum

Velvet Haze Eau de Parfum

Pros

  • Moderate sillage as the fragrance develops

Cons

  • Only lasts for three to four hours on my skin

I’ve been having a bit of a love affair with Byredo fragrances since their flagship store landed in New York City in 2015, and have racked up quite a few of their bottles over the years. I’m serious when I say I get compliments every time I wear one of my Byredo scents—and this musky coconut and patchouli fragrance is no exception. Think of a more elevated version of Estee Lauder’s 2010 Bronze Goddess (which I wore the heck out of over a decade ago). Fair warning: I do sometimes carry a tester-size vial of this in my purse, because it needs to be reapplied after about three to four hours.

Flowerbomb Tiger Lily Eau de Parfum

Pros

  • Great for both day and night wear
  • Features tropical, fresh floral notes

Cons

  • Some testers thought the mango note was too overpowering

This perfume just screams sexy to me, like the perfect date night perfume. So it came as no surprise when I realized that Emily Ratajkowski is the face for this new version of Flowerbomb. While it definitely leans feminine with its warm tropical and candy-like sweetness, I discovered its universal appeal firsthand in a packed elevator, when a random guy broke the awkward silence with a compliment on my “damn good” scent.

Best Light Coconut Perfume

Philosophy Solar Daydream Eau de Toilette

Solar Daydream Eau de Toilette

Pros

  • The lightest coconut scent on this list

Cons

  • Only comes in one size

Philosophy scents are celebrated for their understated charm, speaking softly rather than shouting. And while sometimes it’s nice to draw attention from everybody in the room, there are other times you just want to wear something for yourself. At just over 4 ounces, this pear, jasmine, and coconut milk perfume gives you complete control on how loud you want to be. Personally, I prefer to use this as a "no-fragrance" fragrance (see what I did there? 😉). One to two spritzes in the morning provides just enough to pique my senses, but by the afternoon I’m left with a clean canvas if I’m looking to rock something else.

How to choose the best coconut perfume for you:

line break

Coconut perfumes can be impressively versatile, so keep these factors in mind when shopping for one.

Pick a type. Coconut perfumes aren’t one-size-fits-all, since the note can be combined with plenty of options. Decide the mood you’re going for. If you’re all about fruity scents, look for a coconut perfume rounded out with other fruity notes, such as tropical takes spotlighting pineapple, banana, and mango. For those who prefer warm, sweet gourmands, a vanilla coconut blend is right for you. Then there are citrusy takes, with notes like bergamot, as well as exotic coconut perfumes with woody bases, like oud, patchouli, or sandalwood.

Decide on the strength. Coconut perfumes can range from barely-there to head turners. Determining where you want yours to fall largely depends on the format. Body mists are the lightest option, making them ideal for daytime. Next up are eau de toilettes (EDT), followed by the strongest, eau de parfums (EDP), which have the highest concentration of ingredients and typically have more staying power and sillage (that’s how long they follow you). Some scents come in more than one format, so see what works best for you.
