Some true crime stories leave a mark that time simply cannot erase, and the disappearance of Arlene Fraser is undoubtedly one of them. For over 25 years, the mystery of what happened to the 33-year-old mother-of-two from Elgin has haunted Scotland. Now, the case is being revisited in the gripping BBC documentary series Murder Case: The Hunt for Arlene Fraser’s Killer, which uses never-before-seen archive footage and interviews to shine a light on one of the most complex investigations in British history.
As the series explores, this wasn't just a missing person case; it became a drawn-out legal battle involving a husband with what appeared to be a "cast-iron" alibi and a family left in a devastating state of limbo. Her husband, Nat Fraser, was not arrested and charged until 2001, three years after Arlene vanished, following a painstaking investigation by Grampian Police.
With the documentary bringing Arlene’s story back into the public eye, many are asking: where is Nat Fraser now, and will the truth ever be revealed?
What happened to Arlene Fraser?
The nightmare began on 28 April 1998. Arlene had just waved her children off to school when she vanished from her home. At the time, her marriage to her husband, Nat, was crumbling; Arlene had recently been hospitalised following an assault by him and was in the process of seeking a divorce.
As the BBC's Murder Case details, Nat Fraser appeared to have the perfect alibi. On the morning his wife disappeared, he was out on his rounds as a fruit and veg wholesaler, making sure he was visible to as many customers as possible. However, the prosecution’s theory was chilling: they believed Nat didn't pull the trigger himself, but instead "instructed, or moved others" to kill his wife so he could avoid a costly divorce settlement.
The most haunting piece of evidence? Arlene’s rings. Nine days after she vanished, her gold wedding, engagement, and eternity rings – which she was known to wear constantly –suddenly appeared on a peg in her bathroom. For investigators, it was a clear sign they had been placed there by someone who had access to her body.

Was Arlene Fraser’s body ever found?
Tragically, Arlene Fraser’s body has never been recovered. Despite massive searches across the Scottish Highlands and a reward of £20,000, her remains stay hidden. During the legal proceedings, a former friend of Nat's testified that Nat had told him the body had been burned and the ashes scattered.
In the documentary, the toll on Arlene's family is palpable. Her sister, Carol Gillies, has spent decades campaigning for the truth, previously telling the press: "We just want to find her. We want to be able to put her to rest." Because her location remains a secret, Arlene’s family has never been able to hold a funeral or find a sense of peace.
Where is Nat Fraser now?
Nat Fraser was first convicted of Arlene’s murder in 2003, but that conviction was quashed in 2011 after a Supreme Court ruling. However, the Crown pushed for a retrial in 2012, where a second jury found him guilty. The judge, Lord Bracadale, described the murder as a "calculated" crime and sentenced him to life in prison with a minimum of 17 years.
As of 2026, Nat Fraser remains incarcerated at HM Prison Addiewell in West Lothian. Now in his 70s, he has spent more than a decade behind bars for the second time. Despite losing several appeals and even taking his case to the European Court of Human Rights, he continues to maintain his innocence from his cell.
When is Nat Fraser’s release date?
Because Nat was sentenced to a 17-year minimum term during his 2012 retrial, he is technically eligible to apply for parole in late 2028. However, his release is far from a given.
There is significant pressure for the 'No Body, No Parole' policy (known in Scotland as "Suzanne’s Law") to be strictly applied in his case. This law means that if a killer refuses to disclose the location of a victim’s remains, the Parole Board can take that into account as a reason to keep them in prison. For Arlene’s family, the hope is that Nat will never walk free until he finally gives them the one thing they’ve been waiting nearly 30 years for: the truth.
