Channel 4’s 24 Hours in Police Custody is known for showing viewers the inner workings of real investigations and this week’s episode, following up on the case of Carson Grimes (also known as Carson Phillips) is no exception.

The latest programme shows an update of how Bedfordshire Police honed in on the Luton man, whose home became synonymous with harrowing child sexual abuse over the course of more than a decade. Grimes initially featured on the programme in 2021, which prompted more brave survivors to come forward and share their stories – leading to more admissions and another life sentence.

Here’s what we know about how investigators uncovered his campaign of exploitation and control, and what Grimes’ life in prison is allegedly like today.

Who is Carson Grimes?

Carson Grimes is a former bus driver and convicted sex offender from Luton, Bedfordshire, who used his address in Dumfries Street (often referred to in reporting as a “horror house”) as the setting for prolonged abuse, spanning 1987 and 2001.

Police and prosecutors described Grimes as a prolific offender who targeted vulnerable children and young people over many years, brandishing weapons in front of his terrified targets and convincing them that he had been a member of the special forces who could readily hurt them.

Speaking ahead of 24 Hours in Police Custody airing, Detective Chief Superintendent Zara Brown, Head of Bedfordshire Police’s Crime and Public Protection Unit, said: “Without a doubt, this was one of the largest child sexual abuse and exploitation cases that we have ever dealt with, and Grimes is one of the most depraved predators that we have come across.

“He targeted young, vulnerable people for his own sexual gratification by pretending to be a friend to them and inviting them to his house. He then plied them with drink and drugs before subjecting them to horrific sexual abuse. All the victims have carried the trauma he inflicted on them well into adulthood, with many experiencing long-term emotional and psychological harm. Some have struggled with trust, relationships, and mental health, and the impact of his actions has shaped their lives in ways that cannot be undone.

Grimes’ name is also linked to an alias, Carson Phillips, which appears in official and media reporting around the case.

The investigation became one of Bedfordshire Police’s most significant child sexual exploitation operations, requiring painstaking work to build a case decades after some of the offences took place.

When issuing Grimes a further sentence in 2025, Judge Allison Hunter made plain that his behaviour was repulsive. "You variously groomed and terrified them into submission. None of your victims had the remotest idea what they were getting into.

"I am more than satisfied that you continue to pose the gravest of danger to children and young people of both sexes."

What crimes did Carson Grimes commit?

Grimes’ offending spans multiple decades. In his first major prosecution in 2021, he was convicted of 36 serious sexual offences relating to nine victims and was jailed for life (with a minimum term of 22 years before he could be considered for parole). The offences included grooming and rape, with reporting noting that the youngest victim was aged five. Crucially, the case did not end there. After media coverage, more survivors came forward. That led to a second investigation and further court proceedings.

Grimes later admitted 24 additional offences connected to 13 more victims, dating from 1987 to 2001.

Detective Chief Superintendent Brown, added, “We will tirelessly pursue offenders, no matter how long ago the abuse took place. In this case, even though Grimes was already facing substantial time behind bars, it was important to bring further charges against him to get justice for the additional victims who showed such bravery in coming forward. We know how hard it can be to report abuse, but we are here to listen and support you every step of the way.”

Where is Carson Grimes now?

Carson Grimes is in prison. After being jailed for life in 2021 (with a minimum of 22 years), he was later handed another life sentence after admitting further offences.

During this second sentencing, Judge Allison Hunter told Grimes, “I hope you never see the light of freedom again."
