In the autumn of 2016, during an era where the world's collective Kardashian obsession was in full swing, Kim Kardashian (or Kim Kardashian West, as she was then known) headed to Paris Fashion Week. So far, so normal.

A little over a week earlier, she'd been seen wearing a new piece of jewellery – a huge diamond 'second engagement' ring, from then-husband, Kanye West, and proudly posted pictures of the piece online. Something which sadly caught the eye of a gang of robbers, many of whom are finally on trial this week after a nine-year wait.

During the height of fashion week and in the early hours of 3 October 2016, while Kim was alone in her hotel room, a group of arm men busted in and demanded she hand over her jewellery and any cash/other valuables, tying her up and leaving her in the bathroom.

Today, the first day that the men are in court, we recap the terrifying events of the robbery and its build up.

A timeline of the Kim Kardashian robbery

20 September 2016

Kim's then-husband, Kanye West, gives her a 'second engagement ring' which at the time the press reported is worth $5 million (£3.7 million). Kim proudly posts herself wearing the ring on Snapchat and is also pictured with it on in public.

    28 September 2016

Kim arrives in Paris for Fashion Week and is spotted with her older sister, Kourtney Kardashian Barker, along with her mother Kris Jenner. Along with the rest of her entourage, including assistant, Stephanie Shepherd, Kim stays at Hôtel de Pourtalès, a celebrity favourite due to its seemingly discrete nature.

The night Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint

    3 October 2016: roughly between 2:30 - 3AM

    • In the early hours of the morning, five armed men dressed as police officers burst into Hôtel de Pourtalès reception. They threaten and handcuff the Algerian concierge-security guard on duty, Abdulrahman Ouatiki, demanding he take them to Kim’s suite.
    • The robbers enter Kim's suite as she's lying on her bed. Later, Kim will recall that she heard footsteps and called out for her sister and Stephanie. When no one answered, she panicked and tried calling 911, the US emergency number, which does not work in France. Kim would also later add while on David Letterman that she immediately felt at risk: "I knew someone was there to get me, you just feel it."
    • Kim tries to telephone her bodyguard, Pascal, who is in the club with Kourtney, as robbers enter the room. They demand - via Abdulrahman, the concierge-security guard who is forced to act as an interpreter - she hand over her jewellery, shouting, "The ring, the ring!"

    • The thieves make off with over €10 million (£8.5 million) worth of jewellery, including Kim's new ring worth £3.5 million and other items, as well as €1,000 in cash. They escape on bicycles and foot.
    • Kim is freed and able to call for help. Her bodyguard arrives shortly after, and she provides a statement to the police in the early hours of the morning.
