Actor Sir Michael Gambon has died after a short illness.

The 82-year-old, who was best known for playing Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter franchise, passed away peacefully in hospital.

A statement issued on behalf of his family read: "We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon.

"Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia."

Gambon joined the Harry Potter franchise for the third film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, in 2004.

He took over from the late Richard Harris, who passed away after the filming of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The Irish actor, 82, was an esteemed actor who starred in numerous plays, TV shows and films in a career that spanned six decades.

As well as being a regular in many productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company, he also starred in The Singing Detective, The Casual Vacancy and Fantastic Mr Fox.

Tributes from famous fans have poured in following the news of Gambon's death.

The Grand Tour and Clarkson's Farm presenter Jeremy Clarkson took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to pay his respects, remembering Gambon's time as a guest on Top Gear.

"I'm so sad to hear that Michael Gambon has died," he wrote. "He was hugely amusing, and such a tremendous guest, we even named a corner after him."

Comedian David Baddiel added: "First time I went to see any Theatre with a capital T was Michael Gambon in Brecht's Life of Galileo at the National in 1980.

"It's still the best stage acting I've seen. RIP."

The Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison, who worked with Gambon on Dad's Army, wrote: "The funniest actor I've ever worked with. My lunch breaks on Dad's Army were spent wanting to hear story after story from him. A phenomenal actor. RIP."
