ITV’s Prescription for Murder: True Crime Presents has brought renewed attention to one of the UK’s most disturbing recent family murder cases: Jordan Monaghan, the father convicted of killing two of his own children and later murdering his girlfriend.
The documentary revisits the shocking pattern of deaths that were initially treated as non-suspicious — and the attempted murder of a third child that ultimately helped unravel the truth.
So where is Jordan Monaghan now? Here’s everything we know about the case, the convictions, and his current status.
Who is Jordan Monaghan?
Jordan Monaghan, from Blackburn, Lancashire, is a convicted murderer found guilty of killing his three-week-old daughter, Ruby, in January 2013, his 21-month-old son, Logan, in August 2013, and his girlfriend Evie Adams in 2019.
He was also convicted of the attempted murder of a third child in 2016, who survived and cannot be named for legal reasons.
Monaghan denied the charges, but following a ten-week trial at Preston Crown Court in 2021, a jury found him guilty of three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and child cruelty.

What happened to Ruby and Logan Monaghan?
In January 2013, three-week-old Ruby Monaghan died suddenly. A forensic post-mortem examination at the time recorded her cause of death as bronchial pneumonia, the BBC reports.
Seven months later, in August 2013, Monaghan’s 21-month-old son also Logan died. His cause of death was recorded as unascertained.
Under national joint child death protocols, both deaths were investigated, including forensic post-mortems. However, due to a lack of positive medical evidence suggesting foul play, they were initially treated as non-suspicious.
During the 2021 trial, the prosecution argued that Monaghan had deliberately smothered both children by restricting their breathing. It was alleged he murdered them in an attempt to gain sympathy and repair his strained relationship with their mother.
Jurors ultimately accepted the prosecution’s case that the children’s deaths had not been natural tragedies, but premeditated acts of murder.
The 2016 attempted murder of a third child
In 2016, Monaghan attempted to kill another young child. She survived but cannot be identified for legal reasons.
According to Lancashire Police, it was after this attempted murder that officers began reviewing the earlier deaths of Ruby and Logan. Further expert medical evidence strongly supported the conclusion that both children had died as a result of deliberate restriction of breathing.
Lancashire Police’s Force Major Investigation Team subsequently launched a murder investigation, and Monaghan was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. He was released on bail while officers carried out a detailed and complex investigation, gathering further forensic expert evidence and seeking advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.
The attempted murder proved to be a crucial turning point in exposing the earlier crimes.
The murder of Evie Adams in 2019
While on bail (and as police and prosecutors were building their case against him) Monaghan struck again.
In October 2019, he murdered his 23-year-old girlfriend, Evie Adams, by administering a cocktail of illegally obtained prescription drugs, including tramadol and diazepam.
He then attempted to stage her death as suicide by faking a note.
There had previously been a non-molestation order in place between Monaghan and Adams, granted in April 2018. In July 2019, he was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for breaching that order.
Lancashire Police said Adams had been offered refuge accommodation on two occasions, but the placements broke down because she continued to see Monaghan surreptitiously – behaviour police later described as a sign of his controlling nature.
Monaghan was also subject to monitoring while on bail, and disclosures were made to other women he attempted to form relationships with during that period.
The trial and sentence
In January 2021, following two extensive investigations spanning three years, Monaghan was charged with murder, attempted murder and child cruelty after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.
On 17 December 2021, Lancashire Police confirmed that Monaghan, then aged 30, had been found guilty of:
- The murder of Ruby Monaghan
- The murder of Logan Monaghan
- The murder of Evie Adams
- The attempted murder of a third child
He was sentenced to life imprisonment and must serve a minimum term of 40 years before being eligible to apply for parole.
In a statement released after sentencing, Lancashire Police said:
“There is nothing that can bring Evie, Logan and Ruby back, but we hope that this conviction and sentence brings their families at least some consolation.
“Jordan Monaghan is a ruthless, manipulative and cold-blooded killer who both intended to kill his victims covertly and then made significant efforts to cover up what he had done. It was only after extremely complex and lengthy investigations that we were able to prove that the deaths of both the children and of Evie Adams were premeditated murder.”
They added that it was important to tell the stories of the victims, and said their thoughts remained with the loved ones of Evie, Logan and Ruby.
Where is Jordan Monaghan now?
As of 2026, Jordan Monaghan is serving a life sentence in prison in the UK.
Under the terms of his sentence, he must serve a minimum of 40 years before he can apply for parole. Given he was sentenced in December 2021, he will not be eligible to seek release until at least 2061, when he will be in his late 60s.
There have been no publicly reported successful appeals against his conviction or sentence at the time of writing.
