The official emblem for King Charles III's upcoming coronation was released over the weekend, but fans are only just noticing the hidden meaning behind it.
To recap, on social media the Royal Family unveiled the coronation emblem, which will will feature throughout the historic events in May, including street parties, community gatherings and on official merchandise. The design features the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales and the shamrock of Northern Ireland, and together the flowers create the shape of St Edward’s Crown, with which His Majesty will be crowned at the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
The emblem has been designed by Sir Jony Ive, who described it as an ode "to the happy optimism of spring and celebrates the beginning of this new Carolean era for the United Kingdom."
Sir Ive also went into detail about the symbolism of the emblem, saying: "The design was inspired by King Charles’ love of the planet, nature and his deep concern for the natural world."
As we all know, His Majesty has long-since had a passion for the environment, taking a keen interest in efforts to protect the planet and attending the recent COP26 summit. "One of his great concerns has always been the environment," said Sarah Gristwood, author of Elizabeth: Queen and Crown, adding that now Charles is King, he'll have to remain politically neutral when it comes to the topic.
Nevertheless, Gristwood thinks the environment is a subject that Charles will continue to have an interest in. "That's one thing which most of us would forgive him for if he did go on meddling a bit," she continued. "If word slipped out that behind the scenes he'd been pushing this government's ministers on that, I think we will be grateful for it."
