It's been a couple of days now, but the buzz around England making it to the finals of the Euros 2020 tournament is still very much in the air. Unfortunately - as we all know - after an unreal effort from all of the players, the team lost out to Italy on penalties... and one person who was there to witness such a legendary game in-person was Prince George.
Given that he's only seven-years-old, obviously, the Prince was also there with his parents, Prince William (who is also President of The Football Association) and Kate Middleton, The Duchess of Cambridge. Many commented on how sweet it was to see Prince George and Prince William bonding with one another during the match's highs and lows, and how adorable they looked in their matching smart outfits.
However, according to reports, it seems that the outfit in question was one that caused a wee bit of a debate between the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
During an interview with BBC Radio 5, before the big game, tennis player Marion Bartoli revealed that she'd spent some time with Kate (who is a known tennis fan) at Wimbledon and said that the Duchess wasn't loving the idea of George rocking up to watch England vs Italy in a football shirt.
"Yesterday I had an afternoon tea with The Duchess and it was very much a discussion whether George will be allowed to wear the jersey tonight at Wembley or not," said Bartoli, before adding that William however was quite keen on the idea. "William was for it, Kate not so keen, so we'll see."
To be fair, the royals were sitting up in a very fancy box where the dress code typically adopted is one of a smart suit and tie, and George was seen absolutely loving the game, irrespective of his ensemble.
Everyone's clicking on...
Following the game, Prince William sent a message of congratulations and commiserations to all the players on Instagram, signing it off personally as 'W'. Alongside a photo of the squad, the Duke wrote: "Heartbreaking. Congratulations @Azzurri on a great victory. @England, you’ve all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn’t our day. You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves — I know there’s more to come. W."
Fingers crossed it'll be England's time during next year's World Cup (meaning George will no doubt have plenty of other opportunities to sport an England shirt, if he fancies).
