Today is going to be an emotional day for Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the royal family; it's the day Prince Philip would have turned 100 years old. To mark the occasion, which has arrived just two months after the senior royal passed away, the Queen has planted a special rose in the East Terrace Garden at Windsor Castle.
The rose was given to Her Majesty by the Royal Horticultural Society (The RHS), who have named the flower in the Duke of Edinburgh's memory. Now, as it continues to grow in the grounds of Windsor Castle, it will serve as a long-lasting, sweet reminder of Prince Philip's life.
The Royal Family shared photographs of the Queen receiving the Duke of Edinburgh rose this morning. In them, the monarch can be seen wearing a blue and white dress with a stone-coloured cardigan over the top, and some sunglasses to protect from the sunny day. She is seen smiling as she is handed the rose, which will hopefully bloom next summer.
In other photographs shared on Prince William and Kate Middleton's Instagram account, the Queen can be seen looking a little more pensive on this poignant day. In one of the pictures, she is seen visiting the new home of the rose, with a fittingly sombre look on her face.
Prince Philip passed away in the early hours of 9 April, following a 28-day stay in hospital for an infection. It was later confirmed that he had died of old age. A group of 30 family and close acquaintances gathered a little over a week later for the Duke's funeral, which took place in St George's Chapel in Windsor where grandchildren Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie both held their respective weddings in 2018.
Born on 10 June 1921 in Corfu, in Greece, Prince Philip was royalty himself, and went on to be educated in various European countries including the United Kingdom. He joined the British Royal Navy, and it was through this that he became acquainted with (as she was formerly known) Princess Elizabeth. The couple married at Westminster Abbey on 20 November, 1947, and celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary last November.
