A divisive new Netflix documentary, The Investigation of Lucy Letby, examines the case of a children's nurse convicted of seven counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder, after a high number of babies on the high-dependency unit where she worked became gravely ill or lost their lives.

The film features Letby's new criminal barrister, Mark McDonald, who insists she did not have a fair trial and that she is being used as a scapegoat by a failing NHS hospital, along with Dr Dewi Evans, an independent medical expert who gave evidence against Letby in the trial – who still believes justice has been served correctly.

Elsewhere, Maisie*, a fellow children's nurse and Letby's best friend, shares her take on the harrowing situation, along with an update from Letby as she tries to appeal her sentence.

In a letter to Maisie, Letby writes that "there are no words to describe my situation, but knowing I have your friendship regardless is so important and special to me".

She details how she has her "own room and toilet" in prison and is "able to shower each day and go outside for a walk".

Speaking about the life she left behind, Letby laments the loss of her cats, telling Maisie, "I miss Tigger and Smudge so much, it is heartbreaking. They must think I am a terrible mummy. Mum and Dad are taking good care of them though, and are no doubt spoiling them."

Everyone's clicking on...

When commenting on how she hopes to fight back against her 15 whole life terms, the former children's nurse said, "I’m trying to do all I can to remain strong and positive, I am determined to get through this. I will not give up."

Speaking to Cosmopolitan UK about Lucy and Maisie's friendship, producer Caroline Short said, "It was really clear that their relationship was genuine, that their relationship was a fulfilling friendship."

Plenty of contrasting arguments are put forward in the documentary, which appears to have left viewers questioning whether Letby is guilty after all.
