The 10 best organic and vegan condoms for safe, sustainable sex

Not all ‘natural’ condoms are created the same

By ,
best organic vegan condoms for women and couples uk 2024

We can thank Whole Foods, spenny Atis salads, and Daily Dose juices for the fact we often (read: always) associate ‘organic’ with ‘expensive’. And there is some truth to it — these products can be a little pricier, due to their limited supply and hefty production/labour costs.

But, of course, there are pros to eating organic and shopping sustainably, including a break from eco-guilt and a drop in your carbon footprint. And, if you want to go the extra mile to declare your love for the planet, you could also consider switching to organic, vegan condoms.

Luckily for you, our team of sex writers made it a priority to trial and test a range of more natural rubbers, tracking down the best (and ones to suit every budget). So, keep reading for the results — and a sexpert’s thoughts on why going vegan in the bedroom has serious benefits.

Best organic, vegan condoms at a glance

A quick reminder about condoms

That brief session of sex ed at school should have covered the basics, but here’s a reminder: condoms are a single-use, ‘barrier’ method of contraception that work to prevent the spread of sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies. When used correctly they are 98% effective, and are best paired with water-based lube to limit friction.

There are two main types: internal, worn inside the vagina, and external condoms, worn on the penis — the latter are the types tested by our sex writers here.

But why choose organic, vegan condoms?

Of course, single-use protection is a slightly wasteful yet absolutely necessary option for some people. However, going organic and/or vegan may help reduce your impact on the environment. For example, many of these more natural wrappers are, as a result, compostable or biodegradable.

And there are a host of other pros that CEO and founder of vegan condom brand MyBliss, Mo Carrier, is keen to shout about. “Aside from being better for the environment than traditional latex, vegan condoms come with a host of benefits that go beyond the sustainable perks,” she says.

“For example, vegan condoms don’t feature glycerin, often found in the lubricant lining latex options. Because vegan condoms often use silicone oil instead, they’re not only more pleasurable (and can even intensify orgasms), but are less likely to rip or slip off during sex.”

Carrier also points out that while flavoured/scented condoms are a nice idea in theory, they can leave users feeling irritated, due to the addition of artificial ingredients. “Vegan condoms offer a better, less interrupted experience which is kinder to the environment and the people using them,” she continues. “Whether you have sensitive skin and allergies, want to add more vegan products to your life, or simply want to try something new, vegan condoms are definitely one to consider!”

What ingredients to look out for when buying vegan condoms

Okay, not to state the obvious here, but vegan condoms are all free from animal products — so look out for any pesky animal-derived ingredients when shopping for a natural condom.

“Frustratingly, many brands don’t include their ingredients on the box (but brands like MyBliss are trying to change this),” Carrier explains. “However, you should look for condoms that don’t contain casein (a milk protein). Opt for 100% natural rubber latex, as this is a key ingredient in most natural/vegan condoms.”

If you’re able to spot the ingredients list on your barrier box, it’s also best to opt for vegan or natural condoms with as few ingredients as possible, Carrier advises. “Condoms only need the material (usually latex), a lubricant, and dusting powders (typically one or two ingredients),” she says. “Look for no parabens, flavours, fragrances, and no animal-based ingredients.”

Best all-rounder

MyBliss Ultra Thin Condoms

Ultra Thin Condoms

Pros

  • 100% biodegradable
  • Totally scentless
  • Always be prepared with that 4-week subscription option

Cons

  • Not for use with silicone sex toys

Ultra thin yet super durable, hidden inside coffee pod-style packaging and lined with long-lasting lube — yeah, it’s no surprise MyBlissvegan condoms scored rather highly during our latest round of testing.

Although, want to know what really cemented our love for the brand? The fact these were designed by a woman. Yep, Mo Carrier knew all too well that this form of protection can sometimes bring on a bout of BV, thrush, or an uncomfortable UTI. That’s why her priority was lining the cock sleeves with an organic, silicone lube that won’t play havoc with your pH.

Best for staying in place

LELO HEX Original Condoms

HEX Original Condoms

Pros

  • A top contender for the title of thinnest condom, these come in at 0.045mm
  • Super secure — yet not particularly snug

Cons

  • Lightly lubricated, so we'd suggest adding a bottle of the brand's Personal Moisturiser to your cart

Swedish pleasure purveyor LELO is best know for its premium techy offerings (we shouldn’t need to remind you how much we love the SONA 2 Cruise for no-effort orgasms), but it’s also proven itself to be a pro in terms of protection.

The brand’s cutting-edge natural latex condoms, while super-smooth on the outside, are lined with 350 miniature hexagons on the inside. This boosts the stimulation for the wearer, helps with the transfer of body heat between the two of you, and means it doesn't move — like at all, so get athletic.

Glyde Ultra Flavored Vegan Condoms

Ultra Flavored Vegan Condoms

Pros

  • Choose from Strawberry, Wildberry, Blueberry, Vanilla, and Cola
  • Dairy, glycerin and paraben-free
  • 100% compostable

Cons

  • The red rubber is a little... distracting

Sydney-based brand Glyde offers one of the largest ranges of vegan, ethically-made condoms, including these strawberry-flavoured sleeves that we can confirm will be a sweet addition to your next round of oral.

Crafted from natural rubber latex, these are super-thin (0.062mm, to be exact) and teat-ended to prevent any unwanted bursts/tears.

And to further reduce its impact on the planet, the brand packaged its safety nets inside recycled cardboard boxes, printed with vegetable ink. Stun.

Best on a budget

Smile Makers Come Connected Ultra-Thin Vegan Condoms

Come Connected Ultra-Thin Vegan Condoms

Pros

  • A total bargain, these’ll cost you just 79p a sesh
  • That coffee pod-style packaging is super discreet

Cons

  • Standard size should fit most, but not all

There’s no mood killer quite like struggling to tear open the wrapper of your chosen condom. Hence why Smile Makers made it a priority to drop the (obnoxiously loud) foil in favour of buttercup packaging that also indicates which way is up.

The natural latex condoms have their own list of pros too: a barely-there feel, extra lubrication, and a fairly short list of ingredients that doesn’t include fragrance, parabens, gluten, casein, or spermicide.

If you need any more convincing, one review raved: “Hubs said this was the best condom he’s ever tried.”

Honing in on the former, the ultra-thin, lubricated wrappers are for those who want to feel it all — except eco-guilt. Yep, the brand’s condoms are compostable, biodegradable, carbon neutral, and made with solar polar.

Even better news: 5% of the brand’s profits go to charities like Bloody Good Period (striving for menstrual equity), The Orchid Project (working to end FGC), and AKT (supporting LGBTQ+ young people aged 16-25).

FAQs about vegan, natural, and organic condoms

If you’ve been wanting to make the shift to condoms that won’t contaminate the planet, but you’re worried natural condoms won’t live up to the efficacy of ‘regular’ condoms — look no further.

If there’s one person who can answer your vegan condom queries, it’s Mo Carrier, founder of vegan condom brand MyBliss. So obvs, we asked her to answer your FAQs.

Are vegan condoms less effective than regular condoms?

“No, vegan condoms are not less effective than regular condoms,” Carrier says. “They are made from the same materials as regular condoms and meet the same safety and performance standards. When used correctly, they are just as effective at preventing pregnancy and STIs.”

Do vegan condoms feel different to regular condoms?

The feel of a condom can be a big concern for the wearer — and understandably so. This is your pleasure we’re talking about!

Thankfully, you can commit to saving the animals, preventing any (further) damage to the planet, and a worry-free orgasm all at the same time.

Vegan condoms typically feel very similar to regular condoms since they are made from latex or other comparable materials. The absence of animal-based ingredients doesn’t impact the feel or performance,” Carrier explains. Phew!

How to safely put on a condom

Nightmare sitch: your bedside table is fully loaded with packs of natural condoms... but when it comes down to it you don’t know how to put one on.

Never fear — keep reading for Carrier’s top tips for putting a condom on safely and effectively:

  1. Open carefully: Tear open the package carefully, avoiding sharp objects like scissors or teeth.
  2. Place it on the tip: Place the condom on the tip of the erect penis. Ensure the rolled side is facing out.
  3. Pinch the tip: Pinch the tip of the condom to leave room for semen and prevent air bubbles.
  4. Roll it down: Gently roll the condom down the shaft of the penis all the way to the base.
  5. Dispose properly: After use, carefully remove the condom and dispose of it in a rubbish bin (not the toilet).
