As you can imagine, objects emanating vibes are not sparse on the desk of a sex writer. Every day, at least one new buzzy bestie claiming to be a whole load of superlatives lands on my desk (woe is me!) — many of them not passing my rigorous testing methods.

But when Womanizer’s latest venture arrived in my post bag, I knew I had to try it. Since the brand launched in 2014, it has become known and loved for its sucking-simulation Pleasure Air technology — featuring in some of our favourite clit sucker sex toys, including the Womanizer Next and Womanizer Pro 2.

So, naturally, I was curious how the brand’s first ever vibration-only toy would stand up against its top players.

Although it’s called the Vibe, this pretty-in-pink plaything claims to be the world’s first silent vibrator, set with noiseless motors that use Womanizer’s new UltraWave vibration technology.

That means that, instead of a motor moving in a circular motion, it features what the brand describes as a “linear motor”, which (if all goes according to plan) should result in a “symphony of pleasure”.

Let me tell you, many a toy professing to be completely silent has whirred onto my radar and (spoiler alert) most don’t fulfil their promises. So once the unmistakable Womanizer packaging finally landed on my bed it was time to put its bold claims to the test.

Considering this one had 90% user satisfaction, I had high hopes.

How to use the Womanizer Vibe

This is where I usually mumble something about the fact that I’m not here to tell you how to get off (and I mean it, promise). But if I were to give you some words of advice, I’d say to not underestimate the fact that this is what Charli would describe as “so Julia (aaah ah ah ah)”, in that it delivers vibrations from all 360 degrees of its soft silicone surface.

After you’ve given your new bedroom buddy a good wash, and left it for what I’m sure will feel like a long 90 minutes to charge (watch Clueless or something, IDK), get comfy and slather a generous amount of your favourite water-based lube over its surface, plus anywhere on your body you intend to use it.

The temptation to dive straight into the main event with a clit vibrator is real, but this toy is super versatile and has a real range of vibrations, so use it to warm yourself up! Drag the toy over your favourite erogenous zones (lips, nipples, or ears, anyone?) before trailing it down to your vulva.

Start with the lower settings if you’re looking for a slower crescendo to the finale, or if you want to truly zone out and be in the moment, make the most of its autopilot settings for an unpredictable sesh. For the sensitive vulvas out there, play around with the longer side of the Vibe or roll the rounded end across your clit.

How I tested the Womanizer Vibe

After waiting eagerly for my package, I (a cis woman) finally got my chance to test it out. Over multiple masturbation sessions, I tested each setting — several times over.

I also undertook the extremely challenging and rigorous journalistic task of testing the brand’s ‘silent’ claims by… leaving it turned on in another room to see if I could hear it, and walking up to my flatmate with it switched on to see if she could hear it. Keep reading to find out the verdict.

Who I am: I’m a woman in my mid-20s, who has tested lots of sex toys (including quiet vibrators) in the five years since I started writing and podcasting about sex and relationships — many of these in my role as Senior Sex and Relationships E-commerce Writer at Cosmopolitan.

First impressions

First up, I got the dusky pink version (natch) — though it also comes in a dark blue and sage green.

When I had torn off the packaging like it was the first present I’d ever received, I found the toy itself, a charger, a sticker saying ‘#IMasturbate’ (duh), and a handy little cotton storage pouch.

Unfortunately, my first impression of my new flutter friend was the overwhelming acidic smell of silicone and, while I was grateful to know this toy was fresh from the factory, it didn’t make for the most enjoyable sensory experience.

No matter — I gave it a good wash with my favourite sex toy cleaner (currently Smile Makers’ pear-scented foam) and was soon distracted by its velvety silicone and shape. Similar to the brand’s clit suction simulators, the Vibe is a long tapered shape, with a thicker end that culminates in a slightly hooked tip — like a music note.

Fitting, because a quick read of the included instruction manual told me the Vibe is programmed with 10 intensity patterns, as well as three pre-set ‘autopilot’ sequences based on musical ‘patterns’ — melody, harmony, and orchestral (although, as a former music student I’m not sure ‘pattern’ was the best choice of word here — but that’s beside the point).

Getting started

Once it was fully charged and slathered with a dose of water-based lube, the Vibe was good to go. Holding down the largest (plus) button, it buzzed to life in my hand. It immediately settled on the lowest of its 10 intensities, which is pretty gentle compared to other clit vibrators, and if it wasn’t for the fluttering in my palm I wouldn’t have known it was on at all because it was so damn quiet.

Even when I held it up to my ear I struggled to hear anything, a feat other ‘quiet’ sex toys I’ve owned haven’t quite lived up to. Maybe the silence is down to the new UltraWave Vibration that (whether it’s my imagination or not) directs down towards where you’re holding the toy, rather than sending vibrations through your whole body, as some vibrators do.

Performance

While my immediate instinct was to cup the hook on the underside of the toy over my C-spot, I soon realised the entire toy was vibrating so I experimented with using the broad, rounded end and ridged front (where the buttons are) as I worked my way up through the settings.

Pattern opposers (I know you’re out there): you’ll love this toy, as each of the main intensities is a straight vibration. You heard that right: no annoying combinations in sight. And let me tell you, the leap between the lowest and highest setting is more than obvious, so you can gradually crescendo your way to an orgasm or dive straight in at the deep end when you’re in the mood.

By the time I reached the sixth intensity, though, it was getting hard to hold. Being able to play around with all sides of the toy opens up a world of possible sensations, but unfortunately the 360 vibrations can make it difficult to grip the end of the handle, particularly in the slippery heat of the moment. I don’t know if there’s a solution to this problem that doesn’t result in having to sacrifice the panoramic accolade — maybe a longer handle would do the trick?

But, as you do in these extremely trying situations, I valiantly soldiered on. If the toy had been emanating any kind of noise at this point, I would have been overstimulated, but luckily it remained sub-audible.

Power

Unfortunately, as I worked my way up, the higher of the 10 regular intensities didn’t quite provide the level of stimulation I’d usually expect as a seasoned toy user, so I switched over to the autopilot settings by holding down the button illustrated with a sound wave for two seconds (although it’s worth noting that this button can be a little fiddly when changing settings).

Of the three, my favourite was the first ‘melody’ mode, which gradually builds from a low to a high intensity. This toy is definitely designed for a soft swell towards climax, and for those after a quicker session, I’d recommend turning to the hooked tip for targeted C-spot stimulation to get you there faster.

The verdict

Considering Womanizer’s USP is its clitoral suction toys, I was pleasantly surprised by the Vibe. Its claim to fame (AKA its silence) fulfilled my scrupulous testing criteria — making it the quietest toy I’ve tried to date. And, as we’re in an affordable housing crisis, I know I’m not the only one who doesn’t want their flatmate overhearing their late-night antics.

Its 13 total settings make the Womanizer Vibe an ideal sex toy for beginners or for those with more sensitive vulvas who require a build up to something more powerful, but I can see how it would fall short for anyone who likes a toy that turns their entire body into a vibrator. Plus, at £119 it’s an investment — albeit a quality and long-lasting one (and there’s always the five-year warranty to fall back on if anything does go wrong).

What others thought about the Womanizer Vibe

I wasn’t the only one impressed by the Vibe’s noiselessness. “It’s so smooth and so tactile to handle. The best thing is how quiet it is, no more embarrassing questions on what was that noise the next morning,” says one reviewer, who gave the toy five stars. “Discretion is guaranteed as there is just no noise whatsoever,” another five-star fan comments.

The shape of the Vibe also received its fair share of accolades: “The edges of this vibrator help to vary the vibrations around the clitoris,” one four-star giver mentions.

But like our sex writer, some thought the vibrations weren’t quite intense enough: “If you like power this one isn’t for you,” a reviewer who grants the Vibe two stars notes.

Smashing to know the reviewers are in agreement for once! So there you have it: the Womanizer Vibe is your toy for varied soft, silent vibrations, and clit stimulation — but alas, it might not meet everyone’s mark when it comes to power.
