In case you missed the memo, clitoral suction stimulators — also affectionately known as clit suckers, clit massagers, and oral sex toys — are revolutionising the sex tech game. So, rather unsurprisingly, everyone wants one; and with good reason, as many promise to mimic the feeling of cunnilingus on demand.

Different sex toys use alternate methods to recreate the work of the human tongue — everything from nodules that lap against your clit to air pulses working to create the feeling of gentle suction.

FYI, LELO was one of the first brands to offer a toy of this kind — and when we heard that the SONA 2 Cruise uses sonic pulses which travel deep to the internal structure of your clitoris to provide an “entirely new sensation”, we knew we had to give it a try.

Everything you need to know about LELO’s SONA 2 Cruise

The SONA 2 Cruise is actually a cross between both a clit vibrator and a clitoral suction stimulator. It has a suction nozzle which sits snugly over your clit and emits sonic pulses that some (spoiler: us) say feel just like a lapping tongue.

Unlike its predecessor, the SONA, the SONA 2 Cruise has a wider range of intensities and pulsation patterns to choose from — we’re talking 12 different patterns, all customisable in terms of their ferocity (read: intensity). These are easily controlled thanks to its three buttons, which can increase and decrease the speed of the vibrations (no more switching between every damn one to find your fave!).

LELO's sex tech wizards also added a Cruise Control feature (yes, you’re right in thinking that’s how it got its name), which reserves a little extra power for when you’re about to climax. Just press the middle button to turn it on, and push it firmly against your skin to activate it — i.e. as you would with a partner's face during oral sex. Mwah!

It’s made from soft, body-safe silicone and is completely waterproof. It also has a wider mouth to suit downstairs of all shapes and sizes and its curved inverse shape means it fits perfectly into your palm, while the combination of silicone and metal plating feels super luxurious.

And, ofc, LELO wouldn't force you to leave your buzzy bestie to brave the elements, so it's included one of its signature satin storage pouches to keep it protected post-wank-clean.

How to use the LELO SONA 2 Cruise

We're not here to tell you how to masturbate — really we'd encourage you to experiment and find out what rocks your boat.

But if you need a little helping hand — allow us (no, not like that!). Our sex writers have done all the extreeemely arduous lifting of testing the SONA 2 Cruise's features so we can guide you in your sex tech journey.

Good news: the SONA 2 Cruise is super simple to use. Simply place the mouth over your clit and await your ascent to orgasmic orbit. Be aware there’s no need to pull back your hood or hold it down hard; the sonic pulse is powerful enough to get you off without direct contact.

Hold down the middle ‘()’ button to switch it on, before lightly touching it again to move through the 12 pulsing patterns (one to three are persistent, while four to 12 are intermittent). Then use the ‘+’ and ‘–’ buttons on either side to tailor the intensity to your taste of the moment. Thanks to its ergonomic design, the buttons sit under your fingers as you hold them, making it easy to mix things up mid-use.

While it is waterproof — it’s got that all-important IPX7 rating which means you can submerge it up to one metre for 30 minutes without any issues — we should remind you that water washes away your natural lubrication. That’s why we always recommend lining the lip/tip of your sex toys with water-based lube (we’ve popped our top-rated below) to avoid any chafing, bruising, or discomfort.

Is the LELO SONA 2 Cruise good?

Simply: yes! LELO is right about its Sensonic technology offering a feeling like no other. Let’s be honest: no toy is going to perfectly replicate an (enthusiastic) mouth and tongue repeatedly hitting your vulva and clit.

No sex toy is a replacement for the real thing, we would argue, but they do get damn near — and some even offer totally new sensations you wouldn't be able to experience with a 'real' human.

Obviously, LELO knows what it's doing, as SONA 2 Cruise does offer a powerful, pleasurable sensation that doesn’t feel as raw or intense as some other vibrators on the virtual shelves.

The (award-deserving) designers of the SONA 2 Cruise claim the device works to stimulate your clit from ‘within’ — and I can confirm it does feel like that all-important body part is actually pulsating on its own. If I’m overly honest — we’re all friends here — I was caught off guard by how quickly and easily I finished.

LELO SONA 2 Cruise: An honest review

Star FillStar FillStar FillStar FillHalf Star

Pros

  • Three words: multiple, effortless orgasms
  • Offers something other than buzzy, numbing sensations
  • That battery life lasts (to be exact, up to 120 mins)
  • It gets no louder than 60 decibels — for context, your Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer hits 79 dB

Cons

  • It’s certainly an investment, even when you employ girl math
  • The 12 modes are pretty much identical to those programmed to other LELO playthings

First impressions

As with opening any LELO sex toy, the entire experience immediately ignites my senses. The little black box screams luxury, and once my desperate hands prize it open, the silicone on the SONA is noticeably silkier than any other toys I own (which is, ahem, a lot).

And, shaped like a computer mouse, I love that it sits comfortably in the palm of my hand. There's nothing more annoying than feeling like you really need to grip a sex toy mid-wank (there are more important things to think about, after all!). SONA's grip is helped by the added metallic detail on the back of the toy, which prevents that lubey slip 'n slide.

Then there's that protruding mouth, which I can instantly tell will feel sublime against my clit — I rush to get it charging.

Getting started

After patiently twiddling my thumbs for two hours for SONA to fullycharge (joking! I read the latest issue of Cosmo), now is my big moment.

I slather the tip in lashings of LELO's Personal Moisturizer (AKA, its water-based lube formula), and head to my nipples. Lucky for me, I can easily orgasm from stimulating my nipples, so I decide to tease that erogenous zone to kick things off.

Even on the lowest of its 12 settings, I feel the slow but sure ripple of an orgasm as I stimulate my breasts. Once the warmth noticeably builds, I level up to the third intensity, before heading south to my vulva.

Trying to avoid my C-spot, I drag it around my labia and over the clitoral hood — just how I like it when a partner is going down on me. Soon enough (I'm not going to give the game completely away but think barely in the double digits), the familiar feeling of waves rushing over my body starts to fall over me.

Hitting that middle button, I push my new bedmate closer into my clit as the tension escalates and emanates through my entire body. Thankfully, I'm relieved to discover the intensity of the suction waves don't diminish as I catapult towards orgasm.

Final verdict

It’s safe to say this toy is a new fave. The price point is a little high — to be expected with luxury sex toys from brands like LELO and Womanizer — but it’s totally justified when you consider that you’re paying less than £129 £103.20 (!) for a selection of features and sensations you won’t find within another suction toy.

The Cruise Control is truly a work of art, as I'm often underwhelmed by the power on other oral sex toys decreasing as you clutch it closer to your body while approaching climax.

Plus, a LELO toy is always an object of beauty — and I'll happily be leaving this one on my nightstand.
