Your friends don't trust them
They say love is blind and according to research done by University College London it really is. They found that feelings of love suppressed the area of the brain that controls critical thought so if in doubt ask your friends - who aren't under the influence of love - what they really think.
They put you down in front of people
A little bit of gentle banter and taking of the piss in front of friends is one thing but when they repeatedly talk you down, deliberately contradict what you say and laugh about subjects that are sensitive and private in company, it's definitely time to give them the boot.
Their friends have warned you off them
Few people have a perfectly clean love-life CV but if even their nearest and dearest are concerned about your fragile heart, you know this person has left a trail of broken hearts in their wake. If this is the case, don't assume you'll be the one to change them. Take the easy route and find someone who is fab just the way they are.
You love them... but you don't like them
If this statement applies to you, the chances are you've got 'love' confused with 'lust'. Lust might be all you need for a casual thing, but it isn't a good basis for a long-term relationship. If you want things to go the distance you need to be best mates as well as lovers.
They remind you of a dodgy ex
Some women are like the Pied Piper of Hamelin when it comes to attracting total d-bags. Learn from your mistakes to avoid history repeating itself. Bad eggs tend to exhibit the same tell-tale warning signs so think carefully about behaviour patterns you recognise from the past.
They refuse to meet your parents
Parents are like Rentokil to a knobhead. So if they're avoiding meeting them it probably means one of two things: They don't want to commit to you and the thought of meeting the in-laws fills them with fear.
You've caught them looking through your phone
... and the same goes if you've been snooping on them. If there's no trust in the relationship you can expect a lot of heartbreak ahead. This situation is not unsalvageable but you will need to get to the bottom of why there's a lack of trust between you and take steps to resolve it if you don't want resentment to set in.
They won't tell you who their messages are from
If they're blatantly secretive and refuse to tell you who they're in communication with it's time to give it up.
They won't add you as a friend/follow you on social media
Once you've established you're together there is no reasonable excuse for this. Incriminating pictures? Flirty comments? They may be hiding something.
