During the early stages, conversation is consumed with getting to know each other, with questions about a person’s past, interests, and hobbies taking over. As a partnership progresses, these discussions can often shift to deeper queries, from life goals to what they want out of a relationship. (Of course, there’s always room for fun and flirtatious wonderings wherever you are in your courtship.)

The point is: humans are inquisitive and social beings, and asking our partner questions helps us to gain a further understanding of who they are as a person. Plus, who you are as a couple. Communicating in this way also strengthens the bond between two people, encouraging each other to express their thoughts and feelings, and evoke empathy.

According to Teresha Young, international wellness and relationship coach, asking your partner questions isn’t just small talk, it’s a “powerful form of communication”.

She explains that curiosity shows you “genuinely care about who they are beneath the surface, not just what they present on the outside”. Ultimately, indulging in the two allows you to “build and sustain deeper connection, emotional intimacy, and keep the spark alive”.
