Scene: The year is 1999, you're wearing a pair of stiff denim dungarees and have gathered a choice selection of your preferred classmates together to ring in your seventh year around the sun. You are – where else? – at your local McDonald's restaurant.
Up top, riding high on a shining burger-shaped stool next to creepy facsimiles of Ronald McDonald and his arch nemisis, the Hamburgular, you compare notes on the novelty contents of your Happy Meal with your ride-or-dies. Satisfied, you reach for a chip, not thinking about its salt content; not even once.
These were easier times, better times – a halcyon era before terms like "the cost of living crisis", "positive PCR test", "Megsit" and "It's time to get a real job" entered our shared lexicon.
I'd like to go back to this time, myself, but ever since McDonalds starting phasing out its friendly cast of characters from its marketing materials in the early '00s (WTF), things have a) all gone to sh*t and b) included a serious dearth of novelty burger-related regalia forevermore.
Well... until now, that is! Because – and get ready for this – it turns out that Italian homewares brand Seletti, which has been charming arty types with its wild pop-art inspired designs since the 60s, has been selling a burger-shaped armchair and matching hot dog sofa for years.
The best part? They're very (ahem) affordable, coming in at just over £5.5k for the chair and £6.9k for the sofa. Sure, that's you know, loads of money, but the price of being transported back to your seven-year-old-self, eating a box of McNuggets with your best pals? Priceless.
If I'd have known this before... if I'd only just have known... Imagine lockdown, safely holed up Zooming colleagues from the Burger Chair, before clocking off and moving to the Hot Dog Sofa for the seventh Netflix session of the week. Spending 23 hours a day inside wouldn't have been an issue on the Hot Dog Sofa (it definitely still would have been). The Hot Dog Sofa would have had my back. Literally.
Just try to picture in your mind earnestly plumping up that gherkin slice cushion, diligently keeping your flat game 100, ready for your new love interest's first visit. No more stress, no more swiping, no deep breathing in the bathroom as the doorbell goes; it – and you – would be a surefire hit. From here on out, it's just true love forever. Well, that and the Seletti Burger Chair.
Not convinced? Well, you're in the minority. For one, Twitter is into the burger chair. Very into it.
Now, if you're still unsure that the Seletti Burger Chair and Hot Dog Sofa don't deserve centre stage in your living room, take a look at these three and tell me that they don't look like they're having a good time.
Yeah, that's what I thought. So, now you're aware that this exists, it's time to buy. You can pick up the Seletti Burger Chair here and the Hot Dog Sofa here. Additional salad cushions are available for your maximum comfort. Because, famously, what's comfier than salad?
