Chances are you’ve spent more time at home than usual this year. And when you’re stuck staring at the same four magnolia walls every day, the little things can start to bother you.
While you probably can’t repaint or start hammering things into walls (because you’re going to need that deposit back sometime), there are plenty of things you can do to spruce the place up. If you fancy giving your flat a glow-up in time for the new year, try these boujee interiors tips from stylist Polly O’Flynn, and check out a few of our favourite homeware pieces from Very.
1. Create some mood lighting
According to the experts, lighting is like jewellery for the room. So if you’re still getting lit using just a main ceiling light, it’s time to try something a little more ambient. “Using lamps around the room to light the space, rather than overhead lighting, helps to set the mood and immediately brings the luxe vibes,” says Polly. “Using different sized lamps on various surfaces, such as side tables, shelves, the floor and so on, is an easy way to bring a sense of individual style to your space. And make sure all the bulbs you buy are ‘warm’ not ‘white’ light. Filament bulbs are a great way to create cosy lighting with a high-end aesthetic.”
2. Layer up rich textures
You may not be able to afford marble worktops and bifolding doors, but you can add a little five-star style with some fancy soft furnishings. “Layering rich textures such as wool and velvet gives character and creates a cosy, luxe finish,” Polly explains. “If your sofa is neutral, enhance it with rugs, throws and cushions in bold patterns and colours. But ensure they contrast. So if your rug has an intricate pattern, go bold and abstract with your cushions. Select one or two colours that feature in the pattern and add a couple of solid-coloured cushions or a throw to tie it all together.”
3. Choose neutral bedding
As tempting as it is to get that Little Mix duvet cover, it doesn’t quite say luxury (sorry, ladies). Instead, copy the finest hotels and keep it classy. “Neutral tones – whites, greys, light pinks and stones – always bring a fresh, stylish feeling to the space,” says Polly. “Choose linen, which looks great crinkled straight out of the washing machine, or crisp, high-quality cotton for a chic finish.”
4. Style up your own minibar
Nothing says boujee better than a fully stocked bar in your living room. “I do love a bar trolley,” Polly admits. “I’m big into 30s, 50s and 70s interior design and styling. I would find a great retro-inspired trolley or cabinet and then accessorise it with trinkets from your favourite era, such as vintage glasses and coasters, cocktail stirrers and shakers. They add those little unique touches.”
5. Get creative with plants and prints
Lots of greenery and framed prints make a space feel more personal and upmarket – and we don’t mean the half-dead spider plant and Harry Styles poster wall you cultivated at uni. “Placing plants in front of mirrors is a great way to make a space feel more open and grand,” Polly suggests. “And a salon hang of framed prints close together on your wall brings a sense of individuality. Mix large-scale prints with smaller frames spaced equally down one wall. If your walls are white, use different frames and colourful prints to bring a pop of colour to your room. Command strips are a great way to hang your pictures without damaging the landlord’s walls.”
6. Invest in a smart piece of furniture
A beautiful chair or pretty side table can add a touch of class to your flatshare, and they’re easy to take with you when you move on. “A central statement coffee table always works well,” Polly adds. “Then I suggest hunting online for more affordable coasters or small statement trays to place on top. Vintage trays, serving platters and plates or bowls work well dressed on any surface.”
