We're only a few weeks into January and already we have the next viral moment, as everyone and their mother on TikTok has been making the Japanese Cheesecake. We're no strangers to a good food trend and this one is right up our street. It's easy to make, full of protein and a delicious dessert all in one, what's not to love? But, er what exactly is it? We've got all the details.
What is the Japanese Cheesecake trend?
In the last week TikTok has been full of people recreating this trend that is said to have originated in Japan, hence the name.
It began with Japanese content creators putting Sable biscuits into yoghurt, letting the biscuits soak into the yoghurt and then a few hours later you have a dessert/breakfast that tastes cheesecake like in texture and flavour, despite having no actual cheese in it.
It's gone viral mainly because of how easy to make, but also because it's seen as a high protein dessert.
This is not to be confused with the other Japanese cheesecake that went viral a few years ago, which is an actual cheesecake, and went famous for its' bouncy soufflé like texture.
While most people are obsessed with the new trend, others have called it out and said they don't understand the hype, and crucially - it doesn't taste like cheesecake.
Everyone's clicking on...
How to make the Japanese Cheesecake
It couldn't be simpler to make the viral dessert, all you need is a large pot of yoghurt (most people seem to be using Fage) and a pack of your favourite biscuits (a lot of people are using Biscoff biscuits).
Here's the steps to then make it:
- Open yoghurt pot and insert biscuits into pot.
- Cover and store in fridge for a few hours or ideally overnight to allow the biscuits to soften.
- Reopen and eat - it's literally that easy.
Some people have also been drizzling over honey, caramel, Biscoff syrup or chocolate sauce to add an additional flavour.
The best Japanese Cheesecake combos
In life, and in Japanese Cheesecakes, there are superior biscuits and we've scoured TikTok to find the best ones that work for this recipe.
According to many creators online one of the best biscuits to use is a Biscoff biscuit, and if you want to make it taste even better mix in a shot of espresso and top with chocolate powder to make a tiramisu-like cheesecake.
Other popular combinations people claim work well are:
- Oreos and Greek yoghurt
- Custard Creams with vanilla flavoured Greek yoghurt
- Peanut butter, strawberry jam and Ritz Crackers with Greek yoghurt
