The best winter coats provide the perfect finishing touch to every outfit, so they need to tick A LOT of boxes: versatile, warm (obvs), practical but pretty, and easy to dress up or down. We’re not asking for much then...

The best winter coats to shop in 2026

When it comes to shopping for the best women's coats, you can go one of two ways. You either opt for the investment piece like Charlotte Simone's infamous shearling coat or go trend-led all the way – this season we’re all over leather jackets, suede and faux fur coats. If you really can’t decide which style works best, why not buy more than one? It is Christmas, after all.

What is the best coat to buy now?

Italian Wool Cocoon Coat — Hush — £320

In our opinion, the best kind of winter coat is undoubtedly a tailored wool coat. This season it's all about androgynous vibes, so we're loving everything slouched and oversized.

How much should a winter coat cost?

Look, if there’s one thing you should be spending more money on in cold weather (besides coffee), it’s a decent winter coat. Just like jeans, your outerwear is supposed to last: it shouldn’t sag, fade or fall out of favour (too soon). If you buy the right one, that is.

Can’t afford something super spenny? At least pick something you’re likely to wear a lot, something that will work with a 70% of the items in your capsule wardrobe, and you won’t go off within a few months. Alas, if that means bypassing the leopard-print shacket for a camel wrap coat, so be it. To make things just a little easier, we've chosen coats within a huge range of price points.

What is the warmest winter coat?

Water-Repellent Puffer Down Coat — H&M — £89.99

Unlike lightweight raincoats, the warmest winter coats are anything padded or down-filled.

What is the best value winter coat you can buy?

Topshop Belted Long Line Formal Coat in Buttermilk — ASOS — £43

While we'd all love the luxury of being bundled in a high-end 100% wool coat, budget largely factors into that decision, which makes this season the best time to invest in a premium-feeling coat for less. We suggest scoping out the last of the Black Friday Sales at brands like Reiss and Net-a-Porter, or heading over to H&M, New Look, Mango and Zara.

What is the most stylish winter coat?

Faux Fur Lined Longline Afghan Coat— Superdry — £99

So, obvs puffers and bombers can look fly AF, but in terms of the most stylish? With the vintage revival in full swing and the growing popularity of brands like Charlotte Simone and Peachy Den, we reckon afghan and faux fur coats will continue to steal the spotlight.

Also, if you're looking for stylish plus size coats, we couldn’t recommend ASOS and Selfridges more.
