Searching for wide-fit shoes? These are the 7 best wide-fit shoe brands to know

Shopping for sandals, trainers or boots, these brands have got you covered

By

I haven’t worn a pair of heels since 2020. And while we’ve largely stopped using Covid as a measurement of time, when it comes to heels (and discussing WFH) the metric still applies.

Pre-Covid, I used to love wearing a chunky block-heeled sandal, chic espadrille wedge, or platform ankle boot. Now, though? I favour fashion trainers or walking sandals exclusively. Wedding guest dressing aside, ofc. Though even then I’ll only last a few hours before taking to the dance floor in bare feet, whereas before I could last most of the night.

Maybe it’s not such a surprise given the majority of us spent the pandemic in slippers. Or maybe it has more to do with our feet – specifically the width of them. According to studies, nearly 88% of women wear shoes that are too small for them, and the number of people looking for wide-fit shoes in the UK has been consistently increasing over the last decade.

How do you know if you need wide-fit shoes?

Melissa Epifano, founder of wide-fit shoe brand Winnoh, helpfully breaks it down on TikTok, dedicating her account to educating people on the topic. Spoiler alert: wide-fit shoes aren’t just for plus-size people. You may need wide-fit shoes, and that’s nothing to be embarrassed about.

While you might think wide-fit shoes cater to the width of the sole of your foot, they can actually be a solution for a large instep too – that’s the bony structure on the top of your foot, starting at the base of your toes and extending to the front of your ankle. Melissa explains it as, “If it feels like shoes 'suffocate' or squeeze your feet, you might have a large instep or more volume in your feet. If that’s the case, wide-fit shoes are your best bet!”

What happens if you wear shoes that are too small for you?

You've likely heard of bunions but Amanda Lau, Brand Podiatrist at specialised sizing shoe brand Each x Every, warns: "The other common issue that can result from wearing tight ill-fitting shoes is the development of Morton’s Neuroma which is the thickening of the nerves in the foot resulting in nerve sensations like pins and needles."

So banish what you think you know about wide-fit shoes. No longer just for your grandma, there is a whole host of dedicated wide-fit shoe brands marrying style with comfort, and doing it well we might add.

Keep scrolling for our round-up of the best wide-fit shoe brands to know about, plus our top picks we’re shopping now for fashionable footwear – we're talking comfy heeled mules and trendy wide-calf boots – without a bunion or blister in sight.

Winnoh

After years of frustration at the limited offering available to her and her wide feet, Melissa Epifano launched Winnoh last year. With a 'wide feet-first' ethos, the designs prioritise women with wide feet though the company hopes to expand into multiple widths and additional sizes as it continues to grow.

A true celebration of wide feet and women who have wide feet, Winnoh waves away the notion that wide-fit shoes need to be clunky, outdated, and humble. Instead creating simple, elegant shoes that fit in seamlessly with your wardrobe (and just so happen to fit your feet, too).

Case in point? The Giselle leather mules have sold out *twice* in every colour – not only proving that demand for wide-shoes exists, but it’s possible to have seriously stylish wide-fit shoes, too.

Each x Every

Promising comfort without comprise, designer Joana Feuerharmel worked with Simon Ngu to create a line of shoes that combine fashion-first design with health-informed tech. The result? A collection of heels, sandals, boots, flats and trainers that all feature a slimline, cushioned sole to create a cloud-like feel, available in UK sizes 3 to 9, and narrow, regular or wide options.

"It is really important that we start to overcome the stigma of having wide feet and the misperception that wide-fitting shoes are less fashionable," Simon says. The brand's offering of timeless designs in neutral colourways, complemented by pops of colour and print, prove that wide-fit shoes can in fact be beautiful.

"We use a visual test where each shoe of the same size must look the same irrespective of its width fitting," he continues. In doing so, we hope that more people will make better buying choices that are good for their foot health without feeling like they have to give up on fashion."

Duo Boots

If it's boots you're after, Duo Boots should be top of your list for wide-fit designs. Having pioneered the concept of boots with multiple calf fittings in the 1970s, it continues to offer an impressive eight different calf sizes as well as two foot widths (standard and wide) in its ankle and knee-high boots. So you can guarantee a comfortable, customised fit.

"If you’re looking for added support but also the option to give your feet some breathing room when they inevitably swell after prolonged wear, opt for a lace-up boot so you can give yourself some flexibility," Mary-Alice Malone, head of the brand, advises.

"An obvious but often overlooked attribute when shopping for wider fit footwear is to avoid any styles that are intentionally narrow. A pointed toe can often lead to trouble if you’re not specifically shopping from the wide fit section," she adds. Luckily Duo Boots has the solution for that too with its Saffron boot (below) so you can rock the Western look without any of the discomfort.

Calla shoes

Having suffered from bunions for 20 years, Jennifer Bailey first thought of creating her own footwear brand when she struggled to find comfortable yet stylish shoes for her wedding – lasting only an hour in the pair she ultimately selected. After being made redundant while pregnant, Jennifer finally launched Calla shoes with a priority on wide-fitting shoes to accommodate bunion-sufferers.

Unlike regular wide-fitting shoes, Calla footwear is wide in the toe box – providing additional width and volume where most people need it – while remaining a standard size in the heel to give a secure fit.

Along with a cushioned and arch-supported insole for maximum comfort and support, shoe uppers are crafted from soft materials and designed to disguise your bunions. But even if you don't have bunions, you can still shop for stylish designs in a feel good wide-fit.

Sargasso & Grey

Following the birth of her first child, Katie Owen developed wide feet that made squeezing into standard-width high street heels for her City finance job incredibly painful. Unable to find stylish wide-fit designs and worried about causing herself long-term damage, she enrolled on an evening course in shoe design at London College of Fashion with the plan to eventually solve her problem herself.

Sargasso & Grey's first collection launched in 2014, and after running the business as a side-hustle alongside her full-time job and raising her two children, Katie took the leap to dedicate herself solely to her shoe brand in 2018.

After initially creating stilettos, the collections have expanded to cover all heel heights, flats, trainers and boots, with Her Majesty having worn a pair and another style even featuring in Greta Gerwig's new Barbie film. Talk about an impressive repertoire.

With shoes available in a wide-fit (and sometimes extra wide fit), they also feature memory foam insoles and breathable arch support so whether your issue is bunions, arthritis, Morton’s Neuroma or Plantar Fasciitis, Sargasso & Grey has got your back – or should we say, your foot.

Sole Bliss

After discovering there are more than 10 million women with bunions in the UK alone – herself included – Lisa Kay founded Sole Bliss to create stylish shoes for bunions and wide feet. Following five years of research and development with designers and podiatrists, the first collection of Sole Bliss heels for bunions was launched in 2017.

The collection has since expanded into flats, sandals, trainers and boots all with the brand's patent-pending Comfort Technology (a triple-layer cushioning system that supports and soothes the foot) and Bunion Bed® (a hidden stretch panel that accommodates bunions and wide feet, without altering the silhouette of the shoe).

If that wasn't enough tech packing into one shoe, the wide-fit footwear also incoporates a disguised wide toe box that provides the equivalent width and volume of up to three sizes larger than your usual size. AKA, if you normally take a size 5, your Sole Bliss shoe will give you the equivalent space of up to size 8 at the front. Basically Mary Poppins' bag, but in shoe form.

Sante + Wade

Asking the question, 'why squeeze in (literally) when you can stand out?' Sante + Wade creates footwear spanning heels, sandals, trainers and flats that come in both standard and wide fit. Founded by three black women, it was co-founder Shola Asante who came up with the concept after trying and failing repeatedly to find footwear that fit and reflected her sense of style.

Focusing on statement shoes (that have been worn on the red carpet by Kate Winslet, no less), the collections consist of elevated designs that are as comfortable as they are chic. Sante + Wade also prioritises sustainability. In the past year, the brand has introduced chrome-free lining on all products, recycled cork in the footbed of all trainers, as well as vegetable-tanned leather on selected products.

Because it's not just about looking good, it's about doing good and making eco-friendly fashion choices too.
