It goes without saying, we'd never ditch our jeans completely, but the warm-weather months provide ample opportunity to explore alternative trouser options when denim's insulating properties aren't quite so crucial to our daily ensembles. For spring 2026, there are a few different styles to choose from (hello, cargo pants!), but we've noticed a distinct silhouette trending as of late – balloon leg trousers.

Don't panic, this isn't a revival of the OTT designs that dominated the ‘80s, nor is it referencing the beyond-boho paisley and patchwork patterned styles associated with gap year travellers. Think of these as a not-too-distant cousin of barrel leg jeans.

The trend relates specifically to lightweight, gently draped balloon trousers with soft volume throughout the leg, gathering neatly around the ankle to billow over the cuff. And actually, the look is surprisingly wearable.

Appealing to maximalists and minimalists alike, these trousers have an effortless elegance and are the easiest way to add interest to an otherwise basic outfit. When it comes to colour palette, you should be sticking strictly to block-colour designs. You can't go wrong with neutral hues like black, brown, cream and khaki green, though the street style set have been spotted experimenting with bolder possibilities, too.

The balloon leg's emergence in spring is significant, as pulling off these trousers relies heavily on the rest of your ensemble. The definition of high-low dressing, they can be dressed up or down for almost any occasion, depending on how you style them. Ideal for pairing with all manner of tops, blouses and shirts, the key is to keep your proportions slimmer on your top half to balance out the width of your bottom half.

Similarly, your footwear of choice plays a central role. We'd recommend opting for slimmer styles like ballet flats or Mary Jane trainers if you want a sporty take. Otherwise, heels, be it court shoes or sandals, give extra height, which also works to counteract the volume in the leg. If you're able to flash a bit of skin on the top of your foot or around your ankle, this will visually break things up.

When it comes to shopping the trend, the high street has plenty of choice. Next's tassel scarf belted balloon leg trousers (available in black, and coming soon in brown with a cream lace scarf) feature a detachable scarf detail knotted around the waist to tick off two trends in one – because scarf belts aren't going anywhere in SS26.
