In the never-ending effort to make our clothing work smarter, not harder, we're always on the lookout for pieces that can be dressed up or down, styled for a multitude of occasions, and work with countless outfit combinations. Ideally, the magic number to aim for is three, though things like jeans will easily achieve more. If you can think of at least three different ways you could wear something with existing items you already own, we consider that valid grounds to warrant it a place in your wardrobe.
It's a practice we're keeping in mind – alongside the spring/summer 2026 fashion trends – as the new season's arrival provides the perfect opportunity to fill those inevitable gaps in our attire. Luckily, this poplin shirred V-neck top and coordinating cotton circle midi skirt from Primark's The Edit collection nail both.
Consisting of a sleeveless top with wide-cut shoulders creating a cap-sleeve shape, the bodice is detailed with tiered shirring for a gathered, textured look, before falling into a gently flared peplum hem. A V-neckline at the front and back of the design adds extra interest.
The top is complemented by a matching mid-length skirt cut in a full circle silhouette for maximum volume while maintaining an easy wearability. The elasticated waistband not only promises comfort, it also creates gentle pleats throughout the flowing skirt that subtly mirror the detail in the top.
Both are crafted from 100% cotton poplin for a crisp, lightweight feel, in a bold chilli red hue that is right on trend for spring. Be it sunshine yellow, soft shades of pink or bright, cobalt blue, dopamine hues are everywhere right now. In any other colourway, this co-ord could look twee, but the punchy red gives the set an elegant sophistication balanced by an element of playfulness.
Dress it up with heels (espadrille wedges, barely-there sandals, the choice is yours) and it will work for any event on your spring social calendar. Equally, ballet flats and a lightweight jacket will keep it casual enough for daytime occasions. For now, though, we'll be styling it with pointed-toe black heeled boots and a leather jacket while we wait for the temperatures to warm up.
