PSA: layered t-shirts are trending this spring! Reminiscent of the ‘90s-inspired fad that saw tank tops stacked on top of contrasting coloured tees, as well as the noughties penchant for pairing graphic band shirts over long-sleeved underlayers (Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boi era, we're looking at you), the trend has had an update for spring/summer 2026. Steeped in nostalgia while staying true to fashion's modern minimalism, this season, the look favours a more subtle and sophisticated take on layering.

It might sound simple, but we're obsessed with this styling hack for easy, effortless outfit elevation. There's very little work required to achieve the look; you just layer two tops together. However, the results instantly transform an ordinary ensemble into something with edge and intention. Spotted amongst the street style set at Fashion Week, as well as our Instagram feeds and TikTok FYP in abundance, there's no denying this is well and truly a trend on the rise.

There are a few different ways to flex your sartorial style. Layer a short-sleeve t-shirt over a long-sleeve top for a retro take à la Jennifer Aniston's Rachel Green – it's still a style win! Or, try two short-sleeve tops worn one on top of the other that allows just a thin border of the underneath top to tuck out the bottom of the sleeves and neckline.

When it comes to fit, the choice is yours whether to opt for oversized boxy silhouettes or more figure-hugging styles, depending on your desired result. The key is to make sure the t-shirt you're layering on top is either the same fit or bigger than the t-shirt you're selecting as your base layer.

Sticking with the same colourway across both tops provides a subtle point of interest that draws the eye, while two contrasting coloured tops layered over the top of each other offers a bolder look. Don't be afraid to introduce pattern and texture through striped and printed styles or lace layers that still feel refined.

Add accessories, and your basic t-shirt and jeans becomes worthy of being categorised as jeans and a nice top – AKA everyone's favourite outfit formula. Jeans lean into the laid-back ease, but the t-shirt duo works with more than just denim. Try styling yours with tailored trousers or a straight-fitting midi skirt for plenty of polish and a look that feels more grown-up.
