Jeans and a nice top’ is a go-to outfit for many reasons, and it’s one we’ve been turning to repeatedly lately. Far from lacking inspiration, we’ve instead been updating this failsafe formula with elevated basics that instantly transform the look. Think subtle design details, unusual fabrics and trend-led colours – from cobalt blue to lemon yellow and even chilli red.

When it comes to finding the best elevated basics on the Great British high street, no one does it better than H&M. The latest piece to catch our eye on our practically-daily scroll of the brand’s website (when we’re not nipping into a physical store on our lunch break, that is) is this jersey ruched T-shirt.

Although it might initially appear simple in design, this piece is far superior to any old basic tee. To paraphrase Mean Girls' Mrs George, iconically played by Amy Poehler, ‘this T-shirt is not a regular T-shirt, it’s a cool T-shirt.’ Featuring dropped shoulders, slightly longer than standard short sleeves and a classic round crewneck, the pièce de résistance is the gentle ruching positioned at each of the side seams, creating a gentle drape effect across the torso.

The result? A super flattering fit and a design that looks far more expensive than its purse-friendly £9.99 price tag.

Crafted from a soft-touch jersey fabric, this T-shirt comes in a rich chocolate brown hue as well as a slate grey colourway. To be honest, we’re tempted to get both!

While it obviously works with jeans, this design will effortlessly pair with everything, including tailored trousers and swishy midi skirts. Layer it under blazers for the office and add statement earrings for date night. The styling potential is endless!
